Filter for snapper

start2finish01 Apr 24, 2006 11:38 PM

I am thinking of putting my young common snapper in a 65 gallon tank. What would be the best filter that is quiet and efficient for the turtle? I currently have him in a 20 gal with a whisper filter, but the splashing from the filter can get annoying.

I would recommend a canister filter. For just about any aquatic turtle, canister filters can't be beat. I personally would recommend the Fluval brand of filters. Fluvals are easily disassembled for cleaning and they're easy to start back up - no monkeying around with trying to re-prime the filter. Another keeper I know uses Magnum canister filters and he swears by them. Speaking from experience I think the Fluvals are designed better and are easier to operate than the Magnums.

Big animals, little animals, plants - right down to the sea itself. We need them, not just for their own sake, but because all this has to be here for everybody forever. Only one thing is certain: if we are to preserve our environment and save this priceless wildlife we need much, much more knowledge.

When you change the water on bigger turtle tanks with canister filters, do you just use a python aquarium cleaner to do the water change? Thanks for the help. I will look into the canister filters

I don't use a filter on my tank, i have a 75gallon AGA and the only filtration is my biological media on the rocks, sand and on the pre-filter to my maxi-jets. obviolusly with no filter there are gonna be water changes and the clarity of mine is fine, but it is a hassle cuz some of those days it's like, yay i get to drain and fill the tank back up, but when it's done it's well worth it and iv'e been doing this method for the past 4 years now, my turt has seen 10 gallon, 20 gallon long, and was recently upgraded to a 75gallon AGA and will in the next few months be upgraded to a 210gallon AGA, all using my cleanin method, also as i'm doing the water changes the sand bed also gets mixed around and all old food particles and turtle waste are pulled out. Here is my baby in her 75Gallon, in the vid there was only a Maxi-Jet 600 in the top back right of the tank, but I have recently added a Maxi-Jet in the top back right and the Maxi-Jet 600 was moved over to the top back left(not seen in video)
