Need Egg Help Quick!

jmcghee Apr 25, 2006 03:35 AM

Ok, so I have snakes, and my fiance' decided she wanted to get some beardies last October. We got a newborn pair that were sexed as male and female. We kept them together until about 2 months ago, and seperated them because the "female" was getting aggressive toward the "male". She grew a lot faster than him, and we were scared she'd hurt him, so we seperated them. When we got home tonight, we found eight eggs in the "male's" cage. So apparently she is a he, and he is a she! Has anyone ever heard of them breeding that young? Also, I have no idea if any of these eggs are good. If so, do you incubate them just like snake eggs (in vermiculite/ same temps & humidity)? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Female bearded dragons can be bred as early as 6 months though it is best to wait till they are much older. make sure she gets plenty of high quality food and calcium and expect more eggs in 3-4 weeks.

The eggs you have now can be incubated very similar to snake eggs. Vermiculite mixed with an equal part by weight of water in a deli dish or similar contianer big enough to hold all the eggs comfortably. Incubate at about 85F.

Can you tell if the eggs I have are any good??? All of them are at least somewhat collapsed. Also, I've heard that bearded dragon females can lay infertile eggs periodically throughout their lives... is that true? Thanks again for any help!

yes female beardies lay eggs all through their live, fertile or infertile. of course if you dont have your female with a male at all then they will be infertile. females also can hold the sperm inside their bodies and release it when they are ready to fertilize eggs. infertile eggs are yellow and usually collapse within 48 hours of being laid in my experiences. also females will lay "slugs" which are infertile eggs that are small, very very yellow/orange and torpedo shaped. hope this helps
