.......with many, many photos!

An amazing night. I have been waiting all week for two special girls to drop.

"Del Fuego" was part of a trio of Squaretails that I imported from Germany back in 2002 (thanks Siegi & Frank!). I was forced to sell one of the males early on to cover some bills. In both the 2003 and 2004 breeding seasons, I tried to outcross the male to a beautiful thin-saddled normal. The whole litter was premature and died before my eyes last season. I am not in favor of sibling breedings but I decided it was the only breeding left that I was willing to try......Squaretail x Squaretail.....Del Fuego x her brother Omar.

"Jewel" was the first female Salmon Jungle ever produced....the result of a breeding loan between Todd Smith and Rich Ihle. I acquired her from Todd in 2002 as a baby and raised her slowly for 3 years before she was first introduced to a male. I cashed in a teaching retirement account to buy Jewel. A very controversial move.

Jewel & Del Fuego had POS within two days of each other so I knew it was a remote possibility that they could go on the same day. Technically, they didn't birth on the same day but they did let go of their babies within 3 hours of each other. Del Fuego birthed 9 Squaretails beginning at 10:15 pm on 4-24-06. I knew Jewel was close, in fact, I thought she was going to go first....very active for the last few days. I finished photographing the Squaretails babies and cleaning up Del Fuego's cage at about 12:30. I then downloaded the photos and begin working on them to create a gallery. I checked on her a couple times and she was hiding under the paper so I couldn't be sure what was going on. I finished updating my web site and sending out the news to the waiting list at about 1:30 am on 4-25-06. I stopped at Jewel's cage one last time and you can see what I saw peeking out of the paper below. It is now 5:00 am. Doesn't look like I should bother with sleep tonight. I have too much adrenaline going and my alarm goes off at 5:30 anyway. As for the results.....

Del Fuego:
She did a great job and delivered 9 beautiful Squaretail babies on day 108 POS. There were also 1 stillborn, 2 deformed, and 3 unfertilized. I was extremely fortunate to witness the birthing of all but the first few babies.

Jewel:
I'm not 100% certain since they were pretty gooey and my eyes are pretty bleary......but she had 9 live babies and 7 slugs. I definitely have 1 Salmon Super Jungle. Looks like I also have 5 Salmon Jungles, 2 Jungles, and 1 Salmon. She was day 107 POS.

This night has been very gratifying....a major understatement. Enjoy the blizzard of photos. Actually, I will just give a small sampling here. You will need to use the links to see all the good stuff.

2 spectacular litters in one night...I bet you can hardly contain yourself right now!

Enjoy these times Gray, they are among the best that there is and could not happen to a nicer or more deserving person.

It must be very staifying to look at those litters that you had the vision to begin putting together several years ago. Hopefully the purchase of the salmon jungle female will be less controversial now. The animals look outstanding. Congratulations on having your efforts pay off so nicely.

Both litters are amazing. The jungle litter is particularly impressive and the salmon super jungle has to be one of the snakes of the year. Hopefully now you can finally get some well deserved sleep.

I am a huge fan of the Squaretails, so I am happy for you on that one.

And, you may be the first with a Salmon SUPER JUNGLE. It looks AWESOME! And there is no doubt it is a Super!

Congratulations. Definately a good track going this season, after the first unfortunate breeding.

LauraV Apr 25, 2006 08:15 AM

To me they are both dream litters. Definitely worth cashing in the teacher retirement for. Congrats on two jaw-dropping litters.

Appears you will be having many animals now to pick through and have the difficult task of choosing keepers. That super jungle salmon is amazing.

Definitely a HUGE congratulations to you!! What a fantastic night/morning you had! I'm glad these girls had their babies for you while you were at home and able to photograph and witness everything!

I don't know how you do it - I wouldn't be able to stand leaving for so many hours during the day while my females were so close to having babies! I know I hated it when I had to work my regular job and Sean got to stay at the shop and watch over the expectant moms and peak in on babies every hour!

Anyways, those are some fantastic litters and you DEFINITELY deserve them! That Salmon Super Jungle is amazing!! I LOVE the head pattern - it looks like the symbol from the game Quake! Any ideas of the sex on that one yet?

Congrats again!!

Thanks,
Celia

Congrats!!! You have had some incredible litters this year and I am stil waiting for my first- it must be the East Coast weather. Those Squaretails are phenomenal and the Salmon Super Jungle is off the charts!!! Get some sleep and enjoy your successes.

P.S. I empathize with you in the monetary sacrifices you have made building your collection on a teacher's salary.

Gray, Those litters are just beautiful. I have never been too interested in squartails....UNTIL NOW! They look so awesome, especially when they are all together. With a momma that colorful I can't wait to see how they turn out. I have been praying to see babies from three jungle pairs this season, Rich's salmon jungle to sharp albino, Ryan H's EBV to jungle, and your pair that produced such awesome looking babies. That salmon super jungle is just AMAZING. The color, the pattern, the cleanliness, the contrast, the head, its just perfect. I can't imagine what you are feeling right now. You deserve it man. Please keep those pics coming. Congrats!!!
