Bart update...

lele Jul 30, 2003 11:28 AM

...well, I am glad to say he is still alive. I gave him the neo-cal about 10:00 this morning and after awhile he opened both eyes (he had been keeping his right closed all the time which had me worried). I took him outside for a little sun. it's pretty warm here right now so I only allowed him to be in it for about 1 minute at a time. He hung out with me while I had my coffee and actually began to move around on his own! His color is still good. He had been living a in a deli cup on a moist pt for the last two days but I put him back in the intensive care unit 2.5 gal tank that I have had set up for emergencies

He is still having a problem balancing b/c of that back leg, but I am actually hopeful for the first time in days! I am so glad I didn't put him in the fridge when I thought he was dead!!!!

I'll keep you posted...oh, one question: should I try to give him a drop of water? He has had nothing but the neo-cal yesterday and today and he hasn't had food or drink since Monday night when I forced fed and watered him. Thanks!

I would give him a drop of water too.

Being afraid of overwhelming him with a big water drop I wonder if you could lightly spray him instead. He may try licking water off his own face. You could also try dangling a drop off a syringe just touching his snout and see if he takes the drop. You could try this with warm Pedialyte. Go Bart!!

Thanks Carlton! I did put a drop of pedialyte on the catheter tube that I give the neo-cal with and touched it to his snout but to no avail. I did spritz him lightly (I have a super fine mister) and the tank he is in now has very high humidity and about 73 degrees. I am going to try and give him a pinhead later, on his own - not force feeding like I did before (tho' that worked great!)as he is looking more "chipper" now!

He might absorb some through the skin too.

yeah, I thought about that...think I will give it a try. I am going to take him outside again for some late sun and see if he will eat. His eyes have been open all day - good sign!!!

That is so CUTE! I have this image in my head of a little chameleon "intensive care" specially sized for a pygmy. lol.
I find that if I spray some water right on Orion's lips and chin she will suck some up through her lips. You will see a bit gather, then it will be gone. Just be careful about his nostrils. An eyedropper is good too.. just drip it on his mouth. It may take a few min for him to drink though. I wouldn't worry about the pedialyte unless he is starting to look dehydrated. I think it is better for chams that are starting to show dehydration... If he will drink plain water I'd say that is your best bet. good luck! I'm thinking of you two!
