Fire salamander babies

PreVetGirl May 19, 2003 04:52 PM

Today when i went to mist my fire salamander, I looked in her water dish, and saw two baby salamanders. I didn't even know she was pregnant! When i looked closer, i noticed they were both dead. I was very disappointed to see this, but there is not much i can do about it now.

I have two questions:
1) What is the average number of babies a fire salamander will have at a time?
2) how long of an interval will there be between each birth?

I want to know if she is done giving birth, or if I should be monitoring her for more babies.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Erin

I think the cycle is like almost 6 months if i recall.

They can have up to 20 or more. if they have birth it's good to move the babies to larger aquatic area with some plants.

By the time i got off of work today, she had nine live babies. I have moved them all into another tank.
