To everyone who owns a ball python!

hotridexx Jul 30, 2003 11:35 AM

I am wondering should I put something in my ball's cage so it can have something to climb on.

I can't find any good tree branches outside, and the one's in the pet store are too expensive (for their size).

So any suggestions would be nice.

Thanks,
Geoffrey.
My cage is a 40 gallon breader (36Lx18Wx16H)

I heard that it is not good to bring in outside things, like branches, so I think you are gonna have to look around a little more at other pet stores and stuff. I know that they charge a lot for wood, but it may just be your safest bet.

As long as the wood does not pose a physical threat to the bp (ie: splinters), I don't see why you couldn't use it in your cage. I would, of course, first bake it in the over (as was just posted on this thread) or boil it in water for an extended period of time. Better yet, if you have access to an autoclave just pop it in there. By treating the wood in this manner, you are essentially sterilizing it. I used to do this with my iguana and I did not have any problems.

I live out in the country and have lots and lots of animals that require branches, and the pet store does charge too much. I use maple branches cut live. With my snake I go ahead and bake the branch in the oven for an hour at 200 degrees or so and then freeze it. I've never had a parasite problem. The truth is that a lot of pet stores just go cut down nice looking wood and sell it for a lot. Just never use anything with a strong smell, like cedar.

or.........
you could just go to the local home depot and buy some wooden rods... they come in a lot of different diameters and you can cut them down to size

You dont need 2 but you may have a BP like my little lady who loves 2 climb and they really prefer 2 climb on something. When I move her into her bigger tank she will still have climbing branches.
