I don't presently keep retics although I have in the past and probably will in the future. Don't keep burms either. I do however keep larger constrictors. They aren't on the list so I have no worries. I have a big feeling that many will be busted and many will go underground. The common person that just has a pet retic or burm and has had it for say a year or more isn't going to run and get this permit. Hell the common person probably won't even know about this new law taking place. In the end it's really not that big a deal....if you can afford to keep a large constrictor you can afford $100 a year on top of that for a permit.

Well, first of all, there is no list. Fish and Wildlife gets to make up the list after the fact, which will then have the force of law. So don't assume you're safe.

I agree with you that it will drive a lot of people underground.

A week and a half ago I picked up a burm that was so skinny and had such a bad respiratory infection that it died within 2 days. The owner was not terribly knowledgable, but his real problem was that he couldn't afford vet care. Wouldn't you prefer that someone who has a bit more than him spend his money on vet care than give it to fish and game so they can use it pay for coming to his house to tell him what he already knows (that the snake needs a vet that he can't afford now).

>>....if you can afford to keep a large constrictor you can afford $100 a year on top of that for a permit.

Yeah, and if you can afford a car you can afford to register it, and if you can afford to put a shed in your back yard you can afford $600 for a survey and permits (I'm not bitter though) and....and...and pretty soon the 9 different levels of government you have to deal with are getting 1/3 of what you make because everybody and their brother can think of one thing that you can afford to pay for... Oops, too late...

Once you are registered, then they have the right to search and
examine how you are keeping them.

It seems a little too invasive & Orwellian for my taste...

Those animal police shows are truly horrific. I've only seen the
commercials but I would NEVER want anyone even remotely
associated with them to come even near my house...

Seems to me you have a problem. I tend to watch them from time to time and I would have no problem with any of them comming to my house.

Fact: the trade now needs to be regulated.

This new law is how they are choosing to regulate the trade. I highly doubt they are going to try and track down every large monitor/constrictor owner although I do believe they will be tight with pet shops and herp shows. It's $100....come on. So what if your not part of the problem.

do you really believe they will waste time comming to everyones house and check on how your keeping them? If your keeping them correctly then you shouldn't worry anyways! They have more important things to be doing!

>>do you really believe they will waste time comming to everyones house and check on how your keeping them?

Uh...yeah. They came to inspect for my venomous permit monday and I was told to expect a visit every six months regardless of whether there was any reason for concern. That was the justification given for raising the permit price from $5 to $100. Exact same inspection law and regs if this bill passes.

>>If your keeping them correctly then you shouldn't worry anyways!

If your doing nothing wrong, you shouldn't be hassled. How many other things in your home would you like to have the cops come and inspect on a regular basis to make sure you're doing things right? If that doesn't bother you, fine, but some of us are still trying to hold onto our delusions of freedom...

>>They have more important things to be doing!

Yes, they do. Too bad they may have less time to do them due to this bill...

Note: The officer who inspected my facility was knowledgable, friendly and courteous as are many of the law enforcement officers I've met. However, I've met enough who think everyone they meet is a criminal who just hasn't gotten caught yet, their job is to correct that oversight, and that every law should be interpreted such that we mere civilians are allowed to do as little as possible that I have little interest in having many of them in my home without cause... If your experience is different, I'm happy for you, but you'll meet one of them some day...

They need to inspect for venomous, I'm all for it! highly doubt they will inspect for this other crap.

I'll bite. What exactly do you think the point of the permit is then? They're going to charge people $100 a year for a permit, for which the only real requirements are:
1) Fork over $100
2) Have secure housing for the snakes
3) Keep records of what you have
and you don't think they're going to check on your housing and records?

You not only believe they will do that, you think it's a good idea?

Again, the permit fee was raised specifically to cover the costs of paperwork AND inspections. The fiscal analysis filed with this bill shows (claims) that FWC should just break even on costs to the tune of $300,000 per year of our money used to soothe the phobias of the general public. You can doubt all you want...
