Breeding and Having Multiple Snakes Cage

Jarkko Apr 25, 2006 12:25 PM

I was wondering approximately what size/age is it for a Chondro to typically breed? How long do you keep a pair together for this? Such as what if you don't catch them breeeding?
Also, what are opinions on keeping multiiple Chondro's together? Are there any negative affects to this? I have just purchased one that is mid-color change. I was thinking about getting it sexed, then buy another of the same size/age. Can it be problematic to keep another snake w/ it?

Greg recommends 3 years of age and at least 1000 grams before breeding a female. Males of course can be smaller as they don't have to carry eggs. He usually cycles them first and then leaves them together as long as the female remains interested. Housing multiple animals together is not recommended except during mating. New animals should be quarantined anyway for at least 3-6 months before bringing them into the rest of a collection's area. Chondros are normally solitary so they do better alone.

Thanks for the info. How do you know when a female isn't interested anymore? One other question. I've read quite a bit into it, but I would like to get my snake sexed. Not sure on the age, but it's about mid color change. Red has turned to orange and there is black/green forming along the back of the snake. Not sure on the lenght...maybe 18-24 inches. The head is maybe as big as a quarter. I know a lot of people say to watch out due to fragile tails. Thanks, Andrew

Generally, the female will seperate from the male and want nothing more to do with him. She'll probably end up perching somewhere opposite him. As for sexing, you should generally wait until the baby is at least one year old, and 100 grams or more before probing. Their spines are very fragile and probing too soon can kink them. Judging from the size of your baby, I'd say it's not a year yet, although they all have different rates of growth. Mine's 8 months old, and he/she is 28" long and 92 grams.I'll attempt probing in July or August. I'm sure he or she will be well over 100 grams by then.

Meg...how long should you cycle the snakes before introducing the male and female?

MegF May 04, 2006 07:03 PM

I haven't bred mine yet. Shiloh could probably give you a better answer, but Greg says he cycles them as long as they are actively breeding. There is no set time. I would pick up a copy of his book if you can as it answers most frequently asked questions as well as answering a few that haven't even come to mind!
