Spider and Spider Mojave pictures...

gailt Apr 25, 2006 03:36 PM

I took a couple of pics today outside in the sun. Brian aka havic, too bad you are 3,000 miles away, if you were here in MA I'd ask how much to hire you to take some good pics

Brian, I could only get a couple of pics because they weren't behaving ... they were giving me a real hard time, they both wanted to take off ...

For you I would do it for a baby from one of those lol. no realy I would do it for free. And those are beautiful. What did you put them on? I like that look a little too bright but still cool.

I found that you can get take a good amount of pic's if you take them out of their home straight to where you want to shot at. They are sleepy still and don't move for a few seconds lol.
But then again some of them never want to stay still.
great pic's

I put them on a white piece of cardboard that you get in a craft store. But I think my white balance isn't to great, because the board looks a light blue.

The sun was pretty bright when I took those pictures. When I came in the house, I could barely see

I took them straight from their tubs to the outdoors, but I think they knew they were out and they said, let's take off while we can

I like these photos as they are, but I can always make comments about ideas for photography.

The white looks pretty good on my computer. The white of your photos wasn't as perfect a white as that of the KS.com background, but it wasn't far off either. If you're seeing a blue cast that's strong enough to be bothersome, you might need to check your screen settings.

Another thing you could try would be getting a table with a lightly frosted glass top and putting the white cardboard on the ground under the table. That way, you'd get the same nice contrast with snakes against a white background, but you'd eliminate most of the effect of the shadow on the cardboard.

Another trick would be to get a second piece of white cardboard and set it as a reflector to soften the shadows.

I might also try this same shot over a piece of black or blue velvet.

These snakes are so beautiful that all you really have to do is point the camera and take the shot to get something worth seeing. However, shooting these guys with a great setup would be fun. If I ever get a camera like Brian's and make it to that neck of the woods, I'll have to try my luck.

I cover them with an upside down shoebox until they stop moving around. I get the camera set up, remove the box and shoot quick.

gailt Apr 25, 2006 04:49 PM

I have used hides and things to cover them before shooting, but I was being lazy

I just use Duct tape and then photoshop the Duct tape out of the shot.....

toshamc Apr 25, 2006 04:27 PM

They look great!!!

I have a small litterbox that I put over the snakes while I am adjusting the camera for shots.

But for the most part I've given up on chasing my snakes around trying to get a good shot - LOL - for now on I'm only shooting the half dozen that I know will stay in a ball for 3-5 minutes after being removed from their tub.

Thats also why I rarely post pictures of my albino and angolan the minute those two are out of the tub they are all over the house - makes for difficult shooting!

Very nice, I like the High Gold of the normal Spider, but I think the port holes on the Mojave Spider is pretty cool.

wftright Apr 25, 2006 06:43 PM

These are great shots!! Thanks for showing them together so that I could see the differences more clearly. They are both beautiful snakes, but I'm not sure which I like better. Obviously, the cross is rarer and more valuable, but the spider is a pretty animal.
