Uh Oh....vacation coming up.................>>>

Cleopatra Jul 30, 2003 11:46 AM

well, first off, last night Katrina ate 3 mealworms and Pixie ate 2. i am really happy that they are eating but Pixie still needs to be put in a deli cup to eat. Katrina actually climbed into the cup (on its side) to get to the mealies. also, Beanie laid ANOTHER clutch of eggs...her 7th clutch. *sigh*....i wonder when she will stop laying???
here's the problem. i am going away in 2 weeks for a week long vacation. my adult leos will be fine, i just fill their bowls with 20-30 mealies, fill their water dishes to the brim, and literally saturate their humid hides with water and they are fine. but i have never had baby leos before and i know they need to eat every night instead of every other or every third night like their parents. i can fill their water dish and soak their humid hide but i am at a loss when it comes to feeding them. i would leave mealies in a dish, but so far, they have not touched their mealies in the bowl because i think the bowl is too high for them to see over. the problem is, if i use a nice shallow bottlecap (perfect size) the mealies crawl out!!! what does everyone else use for feeding mealies to their baby leos??? i have a week and a half to find a couple nice size "bowls" for them and train them to eat out of them. i don't know anyone experienced with reptiles so i can't leave them with anyone and i am not sure if i can take them with me.

You could try using a clear plastic deli cup, thats what i'm using as a mealie dish for my new hatchling, she hasn't touched the mealies yet, i don't blame her she's only been in this world for less than a day, lol.

You don't need someone experienced with reptiles, you just need someone to feed her daily and provide fresh water, and change the paper towels once or twice. You can give him/her a 15 minute rundown of the basics. I have someone either stay and gecko sit or come in daily when I go on vacation for more than a couple days if I have babies, but with only a couple of babies, you could bring them to your friend. I personally would not leave babies unattended for a week, they need food every day.

I wouldn't recommend taking them with you, might be too stressful. Have you tried zoo-med's can o' worms? You said Katrina climbed into the cup to get the mealies, so she knows what she's looking for. Get a small bowl and see if they'll eat them. You may want to leave them in the cage overnight. I'd seperate them to make sure they're both eating. My babies eat the mini-size crickets with no problem, so if yours are used to mealies, I would think they'd work just as well. If they'll eat them, problem solved! If not, maybe your adults will. If the adults won't, your out $5 and at least you'll know. Good luck.
