Does anyone know......

xblackheart Apr 25, 2006 06:04 PM

where do corn snakes go if there is no basement? The last story had me thinking. My house is built on cement. There is nothing under the house. Below the floor tiles or carpet, is the cement foundation. I really dont have any holes in my walls either. I guess that is good news, means the snakes have to stay in the house unless they get out a window (which very few screens have gaps or holes), or out the door. Would a snake be able to survive in an attic? There is no floor, and it is all insulation. Would the fiberglass insulation harm the snake?

My typing is all messed up today. I think my brain is going faster than my fingers, as I am missing letters and whole word. Please forgive any errors!

Let me correct this a bit. If anyone KNEW for sure, there would be no lost corns and I know each corn might go a different way. I was asking in general.
I just assume a dark warm place. Do people ever find their snakes under fridges?

I've been keeping snakes since I was about 11(28 now) and have had a couple get loose over those years. I've found all but one and that was a snow corn :*( . Of those that I've found, 3 were able to fit under the door of the snake room, all 3 were under the fridge or in it's coils in the back. The fridge is the first place I check and check it very often when searching. Since the escape of the snow corn, I've escape proofed my snake room by adding thick weather stripping on the underside of the door, only very small hatchling corns could escape the room now. Now if the animal has gotten into the attack there are numerous ways out of the house from there and the snake would probably be gone by now unless there is a nice supply of rodents up there. Hope this helps.

I have had escapes turn up:

Wedged behind the water heater (Ball Python)
In the bread box (Garter)
In the closet with the shoes (Chain King)
Climbng up the door jamb (Cal King and Chain King)
Inside an electric powerstrip (Baby Corn)
Surrounded by 4 cats with murder on their minds (Baby Corn)
Under bookshelves (Ball)
Under the bathroom sink (Large Angry Boa)
Curled up on top of the gerbils cage (Ball)
At least one babby corn left a poop in my wife's panty drawer.
And a redear slider under a rug.

Then there was the Honduran milk that never turned up - far as I know he may still be living at the house we moved out of several years ago.

Hope this helps

What in the world make you think to look inside a power strip?
And I'd be angry if I was under a bathroom sink!!
Did you find these during surches or like others say, by being in the right place at the right time?
Thanks.
I have found my escapees...
**a golden tegu under the frige (I knew he made his way in the kitchen thanks to the present on the floor),
**an albino cal king sunning himself on my front porch (3 months after being missing)
**The same king stuck on some tape that was on the OUTSIDE of his cage(like 3 days after his escape, guess he was trying to come home - he was fine, but a little peeved)
**a garter climbing a shelf, another garter died in a wall in my old house, by the sliding glass door - both these were my first snakes
**a tarantuala in a speaker box
**a corn yearling on a window ledge (almost made his way to freedom)
** a baby corn trying to make its way in the closet in the pet room (found her mere hours after her escape)
**a corn baby crawling on a spare cage (have No idea how he got on it as it was standing on its side)
** a two year old corn in a sock drawer
** the same snake a year before, in my feeder mice cage with a VERY full tummy - Thats when she got her name Houdini

I think that is all my lost and founds. I have one corn that is missing but has not been found. It has only been missing for a couple months, so maybe she will show up.

In each escape, I have learned something new and fixed the problem. Some times unexplained accidents happen in my house, though. I really need to put a lock on my pet room! Two times in the past, I have had two baby corns housed together and something happens and they both get out. Another reason to not house snakes together!!

>>What in the world make you think to look inside a power strip?
To clarify, the snake wasn't inside where the wires are, but curled up inside a mounting bracket assembly. It didn't occur to me to look there - that was wife's idea. In fact I moved the powerstrip twice before actually checking it for snakes.

>>And I'd be angry if I was under a bathroom sink!!
LOL!!! Stay out from under that sink!!!

>>Did you find these during searches or like others say, by being in the right place at the right time?
Both.
Searching is productive during the first few hours.
Some snakes go back to the same place - the chain king really liked the closet.
After that its more luck than anything else.
The cats actually found the baby corn, which was rescued in the nick of time

John D

I found my snow corn hanging off the screen door handle 6 months after she escaped. Got clips to keep her in and one broke, so now she's loose again.

Also have a Hatian tree boa escape last night. She got out of her travel case in the truck. Hopefully she's in my dash. Anyone know if Masdas have snake proof fire walls?

Change the MIA haitian to found. Now to put the truck back together. Dashes are not the easiest things. They give a 6 to 7' snake alot of things to wrap around.

By the way, our house is on concrete, too, and the handle she was draped over was the outside handle. We think she was in the ceiling of the porch looking for food, so they do seem to get into attics.

I HAVENT HAD MANY EXCAPES..... when my family and i were away in korea for the summer.... gertrude got out and when we came back found a mouse in the cage but no snake.... this was when i was just about to start high school. in i think 96?? and she was out of my brothers room and in the upstairs hall closet in a corner. many many years later.. i'd say last year she got out again and was in the corner of the petroom by the door. my husband saw her and said snakes out.... and ran out of the room. gertie is not a very sweet snake and he got scared of her when he tried to feed her a live mouse and she struck at him. romeo this breeding season got out... right after he and emily mated and i found him in a "mouse box" which had at one point housed a feeder mouse in transit to my house from the pet store. it was full of trash and i said "uh oh romeos out" and i heard a rustling and looked in the box and there he was!!! willard the black rat wasnt in his cage during breeding season one day and i looked under some "mouse boxes" and he was under that and a shopping bag also in the pet room. now... i dunno if it was breeding season behavior or what...but those 2 happened within a week of the other.

I don't know.... It has certainly crossed my mind. I am not sure what I can do just yet. I need to get a class 1 license first. All this time I thought MO just had a great lack of laws.... and now I find that you can go catch them if you want, but if you want to keep captive bred native snakes it's $50 a year for a license.....

Conservation department monitors it. So basically just game wardens. I guarantee I could just do it and nobody would be the wiser, but I don't want to be one of those people who give the industry a bad name. $50 annually isn't bad.
