Painful rescue

jmartin104 Apr 25, 2006 07:43 PM

I got a call this morning about a snake in someone's garage. They tell me it's along the top rail and they don't want to move the door for fear of cutting up the snake - kudos to them. I get there and find a small Ball Python - about 2'. It's at the top and appears to be sitting on the pulley. I go up and try to unwrap him. I then realize that the pulley has thin metal cable which pulls the door up and down. The poor snake is wrapped up in the cable and pulley. I can't believe the snake was not cut in half. I disconnected the garage door motor and slowly unwound the snake from the cable. 1/3 of the body was crushed by the cable. It's the lower half (as viewed from top to bottom) so I hope it will recover. The snake is now in the recovery ward. Hopefully this will have a happy ending.

The people who called: husband is terrified of snakes and the wife does not care for them. But instead of killing it, they called me. I like these people.

I'm not sure to be very happy (they didn't kill him and he is being taken care of) or very sad (I always hate to hear a loose ball got injured).

If I were visiting Florida and found a loose ball python, is there anything to keep me from taking him to be my snake? Because he'd be officially a feral animal from the Florida wildlife perspective, I'd think that they'd let me have him. Maybe I should take a trip down there someday.

I may volunteer through the local herp society to help capture stray snakes in my parish. Expanding my collection by catching strays that people report would be a cheap way to get more snakes. Then I could come on the forums every week and ask whether my newest finding was a yellow-belly.

It's not how many snakes you have. It's how happy and healthy you can keep them.

Yes you would bee able to keep it. i live in florida
but its really really rare to find a loose ball you'll have WAAAAAY more chances of finding a loose burm. im sure everyone's heard about "the burm problem" by now

wftright Apr 26, 2006 01:10 AM

Yeah, if we had a "burm problem" in Louisiana, the solution would involve seasonings and rice.

I'm sure FFWCC could care less as long as the would not have to deal with it and it wasn't a controlled animal such as an alligator or bear.

Of all the years in FL this is the first BP. Mostly, I get calls on Coral snakes (which turn out to be Kings), Racers and garden snakes. Most kill the snake and then ask me if it was poisonous. Ugh!

They have iguana roundups regularly in south FL. Of course, 30 4' lizards are a real pain to keep.

The skin was not broken which shocks me. It is very skinny and when I opened the cage to mist it acted hungry. I'm not going to attempt feeding for at least a month. I want all internal injuries to heal. Then I plan to offer smaller than normal FT. So far, the little guy/gal seems pretty resilient. I hope it makes it. And with it being so young, it has plenty of time to grow and recover. We'll see.
