Are these snakes legal?

jimfmcdonald Apr 25, 2006 09:02 PM

I was just wondering if these snakes are legal to have here in California, USA. Oxyrhopus Formosus, and Giant false viper (Xenodon severus). And if they are even available to snake hobbyists. And if so were would I find them and if not Why not? Any help would be great. THANKS.

They are legal within teh U.S. Unfortunately, it is not legal to export them from the majority of their native range.
I have seen Xenodon severus(AKA: false fer-de-lance) available only a few times over the years. There were some juvenile Oxyrhopus Formosus which recently became available, though they sold rather quickly.
I know a few European herpetoculturist working with Oxyrhophus, while I am not aware of anyone currently working with Xenodon severus...

Best of luck,

Jeff
