Under tank heaters should always be plugged in through a thermostat or rheostat, they should never be plugged straight into the wall as this will make them far too hot. If you are concerned about the heater being too hot, chances are it really is. In addition, I am a firm believer that under tank heaters should only be used as a supplemental heat source, they should primarily get heat from above. A heat lamp is ideal as it mimics the light cycles of the sun and also the direction that hognoses would get heat from in the wild. Remember these are diurnal snakes.
