Hey Jim,
Your coxi looks really good, it has a nice vivid color with strong black lines. In general the vividness of the red and strength of the black seem to be slightly variable across the board in coxi sub-species. So to answer your question it all depends if you look at the rest of the species complex or just coxi(s)as this is part of a species that has a fair deal of variability within it.
To show you what I mean by variable:
Oreophis p. porphyracea

(note - not my snake)
You could also check out as it has some good pics of the other subspecies:
www.ratsnakes.com/Eporphyracea.html
Surprisingly it use to be easier to find good pictures of them.

thanks.

Hi Jim,
I've been looking for along time with only a slight amount of luck. The best direction I could point you right now is this breeder/exporter based out of Hong Kong that specializes in Asian herps and has a few of the other sub species from the complex on their site already.
This is his web address:
www.probreeder.com
Btw - They do have some morph specimens from other species that I've never seen in the US yet too. Just to mention one he has a nice established captive collection of Dinodon rufozonatum morphs if your looking to expand your breeding program.
Let me know if you have any luck, I know that you know where to find me already

That particular Hong Kong dealer has sold mandarin ratsnakes to a fellow I know of in Canada. They were truly beautiful specimens but within a few months they were all dead. Now I don't know about this dealer's snakes in general and I only know of this one example but I would guess that his stock is wild caught and that is always a question mark for chinese reptiles. Just thought I'd pass that info along.
Best regards
John

Just out of curiosity how long ago was that sale?
I know from reading up on them that almost all of the Asian ratsnakes were spotty health wise when they first started to be exported. However I've heard that with each captive gen they seem to be doing better. I don't want to discount that breeders experience but things like this do make a difference.

That was 2004. Adam, I'm assuming they weren't cb but wc. You can check with the dealer. He'll probably remember an order to Canada. If he sells any hatchlings they will probably be a better bet to survive. Usually those are ch and are almost as hardy as cb.

One of the easy things that could be done is just ask for a small list of people in say the US in this case that have made purchases from him in the past. Then just do some calls to see how well the animals survived. For the few dollars that it might end up costing could turn out well worth it. Never can be to carefull when dealing with exportation.

If they don't give you any references that's also a form of information.

Jim,
The subspecies pictured is Oreophis porphyraceus laticinctus from Malaysia. The specimen pictured is showing it's juvenile coloration. The orange bands will become darkred. If you go to the classifieds from Kingsnake.com you will find that there are a few specimens of O. p. laticinctus being sold.
Regards,
Bert
Grin, I guess the site I got the picture from must have gotten them confused. That would explain though why I was having so much trouble finding them anywhere else.

Bushmaster Reptiles sells them. 3500.00 per pair CB. You can find them on KS/Breeders/Bushmaster
I believe pro exotics has some. I don't know if they have offered any for sale yet.
Nice coxi Jim. They are cool little snakes. High strung little buggers. Randy
