okay to feed as much as they will eat?

scatticus Apr 25, 2006 09:52 PM

As I've posted before, I just got my first Milk Snake on Friday, and they said he usually eats one pinky on monday's, I gave him one today, and as soon as his nose touched it he went for it, so I gave him another slightly bigger one, and he ate that just as fast. I want him to be healthy, happy, and grow fast...how much can I give a snake with a big appetite?

I feed all my snakes a lot. Hatchlings can really put pinkies away since they digest easily. You will know your snake is doing well in the set up you have provided if it eats a lot and leaves you piles of crap left n right. When it starts taking more solid meals, they will take a bit longer to digest. If things are optimum it will shed ever few weeks and eat like a pig. It will gain length and of course girth but won't become fat. For now just pay attention, for example if it is eating a lot but not pooping much and getting too plump you may have to mess with your temps. These Milks can really eat a lot and grow fast, enjoy your new snake Tom Stevens
