what the heck are all those insects??

lele Apr 26, 2006 11:35 AM

had to laugh at myself - I have phoenix worm, wax worm and fly pupae in a rearing cage with heat lamp. B/t Cyrus and the Blotchies I have high demeand for flying things.

I looked in this morning to see what I could pick out and saw all these tiny little "things" all over the screen - what the h---?

Praying mantis! I had totally forgotten that I had an egg sac in there, too! What a treat - the blotchies are loving them!!! Probably too small for Cyrus and I have nothing to feed the mantids but at least I have lots of food for the new kids in the house.

My mantid egg case hatched this weekend also. I have baby mantids crawling all over the house. (My pygmy cage has a lid with very large holes). I scooped up as many as I could and took them outdoors to spread around on my flower beds and the rest are spread through out the house. It's a good thing I have a very forgiving husband. Diane

LOL!! Well, they won't live long with no food (those indoors) - just hope none find their way to the dining table - or bed!

Your're right. I'm starting to find little mantid "bodies" around on the kitchen floor. But all of the hydei I'm raising also get out of the pygmy palace, so now we have a fruit fly invasion. At first I told my hubby it was from his bananas, but yesterday there were so many running around I had to come clean and admit the source. I guess I'm going to have to get a top with finer screening (or a divorce). the new top will cost less and I kinda love the guy! DM
