Need help BURMESE ?s

deedle Apr 26, 2006 01:21 PM

ok im thinking of getting an Albino Burmese, its a she.

she is really young and is close to 2' very skinny, no one will handle her because she is aggresive, i was at the pet store and pulled her out and held her for 20 minutes not once with aggresion.

she seems to have cage aggression (tries to bite when people go in there)

is that easy to break?

also i have a 6' Irian Jaya and 2 ball pythons (babies) could i stick her in either aquarium?

Thanks

Burmese pythons (as well as all snakes) need to be kept in proper cages, not aquariums. If you can't provide that I would suggest not getting one. Snakes should also be caged individually for many reasons.

I would agree that snakes should be housed individually for a variety of reasons but I do think that a converted aquarium is appropriate housing for some species of snakes. That aside, an aquarium wlll not last a burm very long. She will grow and she will grow fast. I would strongly advise you to think this over well before deciding to buy the snake. How old are you? Are you at a relatively "stable" portion of your life? What's your background with herps and snakes? How long have you been keeping snakes? Burms are a huge commitment that will last many years and buying one should be a well thought out decision.

the fact that you are even considering keeping the burm in the same enclosure as another snake tells me that money may not be overly plentiful in your bank account. that is fine. but, please remember that there is nothing cheap about a burm. if you cant even afford to house it, how will you afford the food? heating? vet bills? please leave it for a more accomplished keeper.

I've got the Burmese a 50 GAL aquarium that is converted for reptiles. Its the same one that houses my Irian Jaya in, these are only temp. living quarters, im building a proper cage for them all, i didnt want to put them together, but just wanted to maybe for about 2 weeks, but i went out a bought a seperate one for the Burmese.

the only snakes that share a cage are the baby ball pythons

and the only reason i rushed to get the burmese is because she is very skinny and was in about a 10 gal aquarium at a pet store, NO ONE would go near her because shes aggresive.

i thank you all for negativity when im trying to give this animal a better home.

further more thanks for not answering my other question, think i'll stick to the people that post in most of the other forums, there a lot more helpful.

Thanks

and yes i have a HUGE rubbermaid feeding thing for all my snakes.

She was Fed today in it, and i gave her some time then moved her into her cage for now. Will handle her again 2morrow night, allthough she's shown no aggression towards me but to everyone else she has. She hisses loud, but then again so does my Irian Jaya and shes a sweet heart. (the IJ)

I'm just looking foward to watching her grow

I think she enjoyed the attention, since she hasn't gotten any in about 2 months @ the pet store.

Hi Deedle-
Let me begin by saying that I'll answer your questions to the best of my ability, and the first and most important is that you should not keep multiple snakes of any species in one cage unless you intend to breed them. If you get this burm in the spirit of rescuing her from a bad situation, the very last thing you should do is stress her out by keeping her with another python. Give her her own suitable living quarters, and keep her as happy as possible. I have absolutely no idea of your financial situation, but speaking from personal experience is it very possible to keep a large constrictor on a budget. If you need help with caging/ feeding etc. I can certainly provide it, and feel free to email me at dutchallison00@yaho.com. I have extremely inexpensive cage designs that I can relay to you if you truly want to give this burm a good home; and intend to be in this for the long run. I'm more than willing to help... take it if you'd like. Either way, good luck with your new burm.
