Does Erown need (or want) a companion? and more ???s

ecb Jul 30, 2003 12:09 PM

her tank is SO big, and I finally got around to planting it, so it lookes somewhat barren now (till the plants fill in, those pots took up a lot of floor space)
do they do better in pairs, or troops?

BTW she is mostly done with shed, and YES it comes in patches, from the extremeties INwards, (but the tail sections come off like a sock)
She is such a PAIN to feed, I have to figure a way to get her to eat in the tank, without the worms getting loose (and in the dirt, and thus lost for good)

and ideas?

She doesn't really need a companion but they do get along in groups if you feel the viv is just too empty. Yeah, they do sort of shed funny, but they usually don't have problems with the shed either so it isn't too bad.

I feed nightcrawlers from a large dog food bowl, the plain plastic cheapos they sell in most pet departments even at discount stores. Mine is about 8" diameter and probably 3" deep. I put the number of worms I think they will eat in with a thin layer of the soil they come in and they don't usually climb out. For my girls, who most all share one large viv, I dump 1 doz worms soil and all and add another dozen. My girls run to the bowl while I'm still stocking it and pig out. If they don't eat them all at first the soil keeps them alive for up to 24 hours more so they they don't go to waste. For my animals that are kept individually or in pairs/trios I use a smaller dish, 6" diameter but still about 3" deep, and fewer worms. I usually figure 2 per animal but some I know will eat less so I use the individuals habits as a guide.

Are you going to be posting pics of your setup? I'd love to see it.

I cannot find my Dig Cam, my Eldest got her Snake, and she is VERY upset that it is MIA and there is almost no consoling her. She wants to Post pics of her setup and new snake
I am going to a store to get some grandfather mint, and creaping thyme today, and maybe some Irish moss too (see which one works best)
I got a mist maker for her tank, thinking it would increase the humididty a bit, it takes it up to 80%, but the bottom of the tank fills up with water, so I may end up with a bubbler, or go back to the splashy fountain (the water filter was a TOTAL bust) or I may use the Mist machine when she is in shed and needs higher humididty, and not other times.
I also have GLUED a piece of aquarium tubing in a corner going to the lowest corner of the tank, so I can syphon out excess water easily, and she cannot dislodge it climbing on it. I did the same thing with the wire on the heat probe for my daughters BP tanks hot spot.

She (erowne) is resting on the dirt more now, or the lower parts of the plants, but she will also climb along the Lilac branch I have in there, she seems to avoid the Grape vine branch I bought now that the Lilac branch is in there (oh well)

i guess I have to clean my room, and find that camera
I HATE cleaning my room (and I M the MOM!!)

I did like U did (imitation - The sincerest form of flattery) and put a medium sized ziplock tupperware dish thiny (the disposable kind) burried in the dirt (with some creaping thyme growing around it) when I was planting all the smaller plants I found (to fill in the dirt that the taller plants did not)
as soon as I was done I put the last few red wrigglers in there, then some meal worms too
she climbed in and ate, she is such a pain to feed, I was THRILLED

The plant with the BIG FAT leaves has mostly died, but it is her favorite to sleep on, so I planted it (with its 3 pitiful leaves)
her spot looks GOOD now, looks natural
(except for the RED paint tray)
That is back to the L side of the tank (like this pic) and I have the Right side lifted almost 1cm, and the back lifted a little more than 0.5 cm, so the front (L) corner by the "fountain" (paint tray) is lowest, so I can syphon off the extra water that spills out, or runs off from the plants

It feels good to make her home more HOMEY

I M gonna get more worms today, the last container I had was BREEDING, so I had a LOT of new baby worms for a month or so, but they finally started to die off, so I will get more tonight, and treat her to some fresh lively worms.

Hey, I like that idea, not mine but the variation you came up with. I have little bowls laying around in my lady's tank for pinkies, nightcrawlers, and other victims. Looks a bit tacky. The clear tubs would be perfect and I have a good supply of them cuz I use them to ship babies when I have them. When I re-plant I'll have to give it a shot!

ACTUALLY
the reason I mostly burried it, was so she would not be able to tip it over, and to keep the contents cool (and to make it not QUITE so unsightly)
the lip of the container is almost 1 cm above the dirt/plant height at the edge
but most of it is burried, to support the sides, and keep the critters inside cool
I also have the piece of Grape Vine branch at the edge where the light would come from, so that they are not getting to much light (that will scare them into escaping no matter how hard it is)
Right now I M trying to figure a way to support the Mist machine ABOVE the tank floor
right now I M thinking of how to cut a quart soup container so the mist will only fall INTO the tank, and not splash out from the jet of watermaybe if I cut a /_ shape in the side, a little more than half way up, and tilt it in to deflect the water back DOWN, then the mist can escape through the gap in the side, but the water will drip back in (dang I am good at spacial relationships, and simple physics)
