Hello, Yesterday one of female red foots was in her Pen doing fine. All of them were recently Vet checked( I do this every 6 months) And were given a clean bill of health. Although I had given them some Parazap prior to that just for a boost for Spring. Well This morning I went to take them back outside to their pen and she was dead! It has been pretty cold at night here so they do not stay outside at night. When I found her she was under the red light and she was hot from being under the light and dead. What could of happened to her? She was eating OK and the only problems she had during winter was a URI and she was treated and was doing good. She was 5.5 years old. I know its only a guess but I just want some ideas. So any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thanks Deb

Sorry to hear about your loss. Anything new growing in the outdoor pen this Spring that she could have eaten? I can only imagine that tortoises like people can have things like heart attacks or strokes that come on unexpectedly. Are the others acting okay? I had a redfoot for 24 years but when he died I could see it coming for a few weeks, gradually getting weaker.

Very sorry for the loss of your red-foot. Toxicities and flukes of nature are possibilities, but perhaps unlikely. I would recommend a post-mortem if you're really curious about the cause of death (or perhaps want to know for the sake of the rest of your torts). The recent respiratory infection may or may not have been the problem. Often the upper resp. signs are clearing, but the initial problem also included pneumonia, which is much harder to treat, and detect. Less commonly, X-rays may even be clear, while the lungs are in distress. What I"m really saying is that it can be difficult to fully assess the entirety of a respiratory illness, and unless other factors are monitored, (bloodwork ect) then outwardly improvement may be misleading.
