Survey: snakes growing while missing &

duffy Apr 26, 2006 04:31 PM

...longest time AWOL.

As many of you read, I found my Baird's which was missing since 9/3...nearly 8 months ago. I think I recall a post of a corn missing for 9 months turning up. What's the longest AWOL story you've got?

And I was (and still am) amazed at how much this snake has grown. I had put his cage out in the basement, thinking that he may crawl back in at some point. Well...he has clearly outgrown his cage, hide, and the size of prey items that I was feeding him. He's been eating something! There's plenty of mice around here, but he would have probably had to find some nests to raid given his size. He was on large pinkies when he escaped. He could probably take a hopper now! Duffy

My longest escapee, that I got lucky enough to find again, was around five months.
He didn't get as lucky as your bairdi.
He hadn't grown at all. I don't think he ate while "gone"
It took a while for him to start growing again after I found him but he is doing great now.

not the longest awol I've had by any means, but the most memorable was when my first albino burm escaped. He was appr. 11ft when he went on vacation. He of course could not get out the snake room but took me 4 weeks to find him. found him curled under the last desk drawer resting on the liner. He would come out on some nights and knock all the books off the shelf, just not the nights when I was home to catch him. Who would think an 11ft yellow and white snake could stay hidden in one room for soo long, lol.

LOL, it almost sounds impossible. I mean how would a snake that size be able to squeeze into a space that barely had 2 inches of verticle space. Now I know there is no place that is not possible for an escapee. BTW that was over 11 years ago, I think I was 16-17 at the time, lol.

We live and learn! lol. Truly amazing the things snakes can get into!! I just assume if the head can fit, they can fit. I am by far no expert, though. I learn from every one of my escapees and have had plenty to learn from, thats for sure.
Snakes are Kinda like an octopus. It can squeeze into a soda can. Has anyone seen that footage on the discovery channel. Its old, but cool. Helps to not have any bones!! lol. Although snakes have bones, they are amazingly flexable.

My albino cal king was gone for 3 months or so. He doubled in size. Although I have no idea what he ate. We have no rodents (at least none I have ever seen or seen proof of outside or inside). The only thing we have around are frogs and toads. Just makes me wonder.
This snake was nippy when he escaped, but perfectly friendly when he was found. Has not tried to bite since.

I had one escape during the summer of 1999 and he turned up the following winter. The funny thing is that I moved to a new house that fall. Some how I "packed" him for the move and didn't know it!!

Makes sense, though. With so many places to hide, you gotta figure he may have hidden in furniture, appliances, boxes etc. I like that one. :D

xblackheart Apr 27, 2006 01:41 PM

lol. Better than leaving him for the next owners to find!!!
I did that with one of my escapees. When she escaped, I had a dresser in the pet room. I moved it into another room after her escape. Found her in it not too long after. I don't think she crawled into the dresser after I moved it, but was in the dresser When I moved it.

I had a beautiful zig zag corn het for lavender. I got him at a show and only had him for a few months before he escaped. Well its been almost 3 years and I have moved since so I don't think I will be finding him. I only hope that someone found him. I don't think corns like Washington state winters.

Funny story was when my snow misty escaped. She was gone for about 3 weeks. I got a call from my brother-in-law, who we where staying with at the time, that she was in his duffel bag that he took to a little league game. He was terrified of her, actually all the team members where. Luckily a former pet store owner took care of her until we got there. She was very thirsty but otherwise fine.

May all your MIA's turn up alive & well. It's great to have my Baird's back. He'll always be "extra special" now. Hope I can hold on to the little Houdini. I've only ever had 3 snakes escape, and the other two were found in the same room the same day (that was before I had a special snake room). 8 months.. Man! I had written that little sucker off. How wrong I was.
