Which Type of Carpet to Get?

awesomo6000 Apr 26, 2006 10:51 PM

So I've had experience with a fair number of python species, but I haven't done a lot with carpets. I was looking into possibly buying one this summer, but I'm not exactly sure what I'd like to get. Pattern wise, I really like the jungles and IJs. Is there any major difference between the various types as far as feeding, attitude, etc. I fully realize that every snake is different, but I was just wondering if there were any trends I should be aware of.

Thanks for any imput you can give

I have a 6'5" IJ shes marked beautifully, and has a great temperment, she eats well and she strikes so fast its fun to watch her eat (even f/t) she however does not eat Rats, she hates the scent f/t Jumbo Adult Mice 2-3 of them a week (fatting her up for breeding)

Personally i love the Jag looks but those are very $$$$$$

i however wouldn't give her up for a Jag, shes just that great!

heres a cpl pictures of her

What flavor Ice Cream do you like? There is a carpet for everyone!
Personally, I am partial to Jungles although I am very smitten with our Jags as well.
All of the various types have pros and cons, and also each individual animal will have its own tendencies, etc...Here are a few major points...

*Jungles and IJ/WPs can be reluctant to eat rats, some do eat rats. But some do definately seem adverse to eating rats, despite tricks.

*Coastals probably have the potential to reach sizes that are more challenging than Jungles or IJ/WPs. Tigers (a coastal morph) are reported to remain smaller than typical coastals. Our Tri-stripes (another coastal morph) have not grown as large as I would have anticipated either, but maybe they will just keep growing, time will tell.

*Jungles are probably the most nervous of the major types. Not to say they can't become absolutely puppy dog tame. But of the types, they are in my experience the most nervous.

These are not hard and fast rules, and I can think of exceptions to these generalizations, but it should give you a place to start. I am sure others will jump on here with their opinions. There are subtle morphological variations as well. Some are difficult to quantify. To my eye, Coastal heads are longer and less "sharp" than a Jungle head. Older Jayas can develop wide, dragon like heads.

Oh who am I kidding?!? Get a Jungle. Good luck!!!

They are Beautiful, Not seen as much as Jungles or Jayas, and are Very mellow, especailly as adults. They are not Carpets, but They are Cool...Jungles and Jayas are both good choices though...Good luck choosing one...or you can By one of each..LOL
