Size of african rock pythons

jonasgn Apr 27, 2006 09:19 AM

Hello i would just like to know what the size of african rock pythons is.
I have heard anything from 16 to 30 feet, so i`m not sure. My guess is around 16-18 for females and 12-14 for males. Is that correct?
I`m thinking of getting a male, so i`m actually most interested in the male size.
Hope you can help me.

Thanks Jonas

LOL. I think not. I don't know their exact size, but they're generally a little smaller than Burms, and even Burms don't tend to reach 20-25' on average. Probably the only snake that does reach those sizes on a regular basis are Retics.

I would say average size for females would be more like 14-16' and somewhere between 12' and 15' for males.

when i used to keep rock pythons the biggest male we had was 14 and half feet and was 8 years old....just remember if you do get a rock python make sure you know what your getting your self into...and please make sure you get a baby and handle him every day so he will tame down because you dont want a 12 foot snake thats mean as can be....hope this helps some...

Thanks
Erik

Sorry, but if I'm not mistanken the afrock is the #3 largest snake, after the retic and anaconda, and BEFORE the burms.

For p. sebae, you are going to see regional and ssp variation. A decent rule of thumb would hold /- 12' for adult males and /- 16' for adult females. Obviously females have been significantly larger, up to around 200 lb.

Remember too that literally every snake length you hear about is wrong. Most 12' snakes are closer to 10', etc. A 12' snake is still very large, though nowhere near as large as the fear-mongers would have you believe.

Very few African Rocks ever see 20', especially in the wild. Actually, there are very few pythons (or anacondas) that go over 20' anymore. The most common to find would be retics, and maybe a skinny old nasty scrubbie.
