Which Hydrodynastes ssp?

Aka2212 Apr 27, 2006 12:16 PM

I just bought 1,1 Hydrodynastes gigas, but i have been told there has been a lot of confusion about the different subspecies?
So i was wondering if anyone here could confirm this is Hydrodynastes gigas?

Thanks
Jakob

I'm sure someone out there can give some kind of definitive diference between gigas and bicinctus. I have seen pictures, but personally I have yet to come across anything compelling enough to matter.

Your snake looks very much like the gigas I have (when it was young). Also If it's c/b there is as much a chance that it could have come from a mix of both (if there really is such a thing) as I would safely wager that nearly everybody would just look at their Hydronastes based on improving color or pattern and not look into whether it was one or two species.

These days, unless its W/c with a provable locality, I wouldn't worry about it. Not enough difference to really matter at all.

Hi Frank,

Thanks for the reply!

No matter if they are one sp or another i'm still happy to have gotten a pair. They are not seen that often over here (europe). They are beautiful and are doing fine so what more can i ask for *S*

Cheers
Jakob

It is gigas. Bicintus are red in color and do not feed in captivity.
