What do you keep your lobster roaches in?

silvertarpon Jul 30, 2003 12:34 PM

I am getting n my first shippment of Lobster roaches and was planning on putting them in a rubbermaid tote with vasoline around the top inner walls. Will this keep them from climbing up? Of course I will have a lid on as well. Also, how do you feed them to your Cham? Thank you, and I'm sorry if this topic has been discussed already.

The setup you're describing sounds good. You will want some ventilation though once you get a lot of lobsters. Look here for how to cut out panels and cover them with screen.

just scroll down a bit.

I think that if you don't do this, you could have problems with mold and bacteria.

Thats a link I havn't seen yet. Nice one! And I do much searching...

Lobsters are great feeders. To feed them off it's best to be able to sex them. Because you want to feed the males off & leave the females, if you want to keep a colony going.

The males look like this on the under back side near the tip(end) of the abdomen. () The females look like this ( ). Also the females are thicker & rounder on the backsides (like most females...lol). The males are thinner when looking from the side. Males also move faster & are generally more energetic.

Once you get some out in a small container you can cut off thier head(they move around wildly), stick them in the freezer for a couple min(makes them sluggish & slow) or trim thier legs(so they cant climb out of a feeding tray).

Oh, like the article. Keep roaches in any plastic container with a top & some screen on it. I use a door knob-hole driller to put large holes in. Then use a soldering iron & hold the cut screen on the plastic from the inside. The iron will melt the plastic thru onto the screen. Sometimes hit the screen with the iron & it will heat up & melt the plastic. Once done, hot glue the outside edge of the screen & plastic.

Hope this helps. Sorry for the spelling errors didn't have time to check it.
