Mesh Cages?

seanu13 Apr 27, 2006 02:40 PM

Are "All Mesh" cages alright for herps that need higher humidity? I'm looking for a cage for an arboreal gecko and was wondering if this sort of cage was alright, or if I should stick to glass/plastic... Any help would be appreciated.

Unless you humidify the entire room, which wouldn't be practical unless you had a room full of mesh enclosures. It will be difficult and nearly impossible to keep humidity within a mesh enclosure.

There are other options but we need some more info regarding room temps and location (living room or other herp room). Specific animal, single cage or a whole wall and size enclosure.

It would be a Crested Gecko (dont know the morph or anything yet, haven't decided) and I live in Louisiana (outside high humidity generally)but i dont know about inside. The temp inside would generally be around 75 (room temp). I didn't think I needed an encloser any larger than maybe a 20 gallon tall aquarium to start out with (if I need larger, do say so). Definitely not anything too enormous.

I myself was actually planning on getting into them as well in the near future. While my true cageing is still in the design stage I did build some racks that will work well for the geckos. Basically shelves of melemine lamintated with vinyl similar to contact paper. the tubs I had were the deep sterilite I think they were 56qt or 68qt I can't remember.

Cresteds need no real heat source outside of my reptile room's 80* and daily misting would suffice for the humidity. While I never really bought them I still have the rack and it was really easy to build.

Of course if you want a more display oriented cage than the tub and rack idea wouldn't be for you there are other options including glass aquaria on end.

Let us know what you want as an end product.

As an end product I'd like a cage thats more display oriented like you said. Something "pretty" to look at thats detailed and natural looking. A lot of show basically.

Something as natural as possible
