Wildest snake finds

xenophon Apr 27, 2006 10:36 PM

The previous post got me thinking about the craziest snake searching stories. My craziest was when I was at the zoo and near an outside exhibit I saw a 12-15 inch long garter snake emerge from what looked like a controlled brush burn, I kept it all day, through the dolphin show, and all over the place. It was on my high school senior trip, and i managed to almost get it onto the bus back home until a chaperone saw it...damn...I had to release it, so i did it near some flowers. hehehehee I named it Redemption.

Well maybe not the wildest but most surprising experience while field herping was when....
I could have sworn I saw a snake slide under a rock so I immediately flipped it not taking the time to pay attention. So I am all ready to grab this snake before it gets away. Well to my surprise instead of a snake under the rock I find a very big angry tarantula that lunged forward and bit me on the fingernail (lucky me!) That gave me cold chills for a week! Not a big fan of spiders (sorry raisnok ) So now I am much more carefull when flipping. Luckilly there wasn't a copperhead under that rock!

No joke man. You could have been dead!
I have a pet tarantula. Thinking of selling it. You know you want it. lol. I am not really afraid of anything, so it amuses me when people don't like a specific animal, insect or other.

WELL, SOME CAN BE CUTE... the reptile show in richmond had "spiderlings" for $2 a pop. they were oh so cute. i almost got one...i wouldnt have ever touched it....just looked at it. and i saw a baby scorpion once and it was soooooo cute. but when they grow up they look all greasy and nasty....but they'd probably grow on me. i have lil spiders around my house i call "charlotte" and when they come down to my level i put them outside to eat bugs and such so my cats wont eat the spiders before the thing has a chance!!!

several...........going after a milk snake here in Kansas that was out on a over cast day that slid under a rock and upon lifting the rock finding a large timber rattlesnake with the milk snake. Flint Hills of Kansas > lifting a very large rock on a hill side by the lifting backward up toward you method and seeing blaring exposed teeth of a opossum inches from your face as you peek under the rock. Hunting west Texas one night and stopping to what appeared to be a resting snake on the pavement and turns out to be a used condom. West Texas again > driving the curves one night and almost crashing because to what we saw was the biggest and prettiest gray-banded kingsnake ever either just coming on to road or getting off road turned out to be a PAINTED and planted toy snake by some one.

That sounds like a deliberate, malicious, and diabolical attempt to cause grevious bodilly injury and/or death, by someone with a grudge against herpers. It also sounds like a setup. Do you have any enemies who knew you would be driving that stretch of road? Or maybe just a really bad practicle joke.

of breaking the boredom of spending 6 or more hours driving the pavement at night. Normally all in good fun as to a practical joke. I also have been caught up in the game of doing so but in the flat areas or roads going up or down, Some of the fake snakes that have been used are > rubber snakes, spaced out chunks of carrots, spring coils, even spaced out small rocks ( not even painted to resemble what ? a California King Snake on pavement of west Texas ? ). Some of the jokers that have done this is very good at it as to the placing of the fakes in an ideal situation of making the find more than realistic as the curves and your headlights just catching enough of the fake to make it non-obvious that it is indeed a fake. . Several times we even welcome this scenario as to " waking " us up ! LOL !
