from pinkies to fuzzies

tavantz Apr 28, 2006 10:38 AM

ive had my baby snake for about a month or so and the first two weeks it seemed fine with one pinkie a week, now it's always hungry and im not really sure how i should feed it, i gave it one pinkie 5 days ago, and i just gave it 2 today..... when i dropped the second one in the box it attacked it in less then a second..... i guess what im asking is if its safe to start feeding it fuzzies (once a week) or keep giving it 2-3 pinkies a week..... or am i just overfeeding it by giving it this much food

How big is your snake? I keep 6 snakes and my experience is pretty limited, but judging from what I've seen from the 6 I keep, they waste no time in dispatching a second food item when offered. I'm guessing that after consuming the first food item they're still in "hunt-kill-eat" mode for a while. I don't know if that's just a natural reflex after eating or if it means that they're still hungry. Also from what I've read and heard, food every 5-7 days for youngsters is OK. Do the pinkies leave a visible lump after being consumed?

the pinkies do look somewhat visible when they are eaten, but only for a little bit (maybe a few mins) then you can barely see the difference..... my snake is prob about a foot and a half in length....

At a foot and a half long, it is probably time to start feeding fuzzies. Start off with small ones (peach fuzzies). Usually your snake will not try to eat something that is too big for it to handle. I feed about every 5 days until my snakes are about 3 yrs old, then I go to once a week. I also prefer to feed a few smaller food items rather than one large one. My adult pyros and mexicana still eat fuzzies and the occasional hopper rather than adult mice.
