How many types of box turtles are there? are Florida and Ornate the same type? I see some Ornate wood turtles listed for sale and they look like box turtles with more color, are they just another breed of box turtle? I am looking to expand my pen of Eastern Boxs but im not sure what all other names they go by and I dont want to mix breeds. Can anyone help me with this? Below is a picture of my Eastern Boxs.

THese are the list of american box turtles species, Eastern, 3 toed, ornate, gulf coast, flrdia, desert box turtle, or ornate L. Wood turtles are not box turtles, they are more aquatic, if you want to breed i would just stick with all easterns, dont buy anything else. like wood ornates or what ever, because if you got a wood you need a new enclosure keep them seperate.

Desert box turtles are Terrapene Ornata Luteola

Florida box turtles are Terrapene Carolina Bauri

Eastern box turtles are Terrapene Carolina Carolina

Three toe box turtles are Terrapene Carolina Triunguis

Gulf Coast box turtles are Terrapene Carolina Major

there are others in the Terrapene family but they are no where near as common, they are, Mexican Spotted Box Turtle, Coahuila Box Turtle, Yucatan Box Turtle and Mexican Box Turtle.
