Importing monitors

munin Apr 28, 2006 10:44 PM

Can somebody describe the process of importing a monitor from another country. Is it possible for a private individual? I haven't been able to find anything about it on the internet. Which species are legal to possess?

Go to US Fish and Wildlife Service website and it has the information there and links to it. I believe you can obtain a permit for commercial import/export and a personal import permit etc, so check it out.

Basically you apply, jump through hoops, apply , jump through hoops, call, jump through hoops, get questioned, jump through more hoops. Once you finally do get everything in order you have to find a trustworthy source and oh and then deal with all the fees involved not only in applications and permits but in costs on getting the animals over here. I do not think it would be worth it for just an individual.

It deffinatly wasn't that way for me when I imported, about 3 years ago if that makes a difference.

The process for me was to call the USFW and tell them I needed an agent to meet me at the freight cargo to inspect my package. If it was on a weekday, I think there was a $20 fee. They would inspect the animal, and CITES permits. Then stamp the CITES and I would take these to US Customs, where they would ask a couple questions and sign off on the paperwork. I would then go back to freight cargo and pick up my reptiles. I was told that because I was bringing in just a couple animals, I didn't need a permit. I imported several times this way.

animals around, why would you want to import? They bring in way too many internal/external parasites, please you take the chance of getting ripped off by someone overseas. I would recommend Robyn from Pro Exotics for you monitor needs.

I know you don't know me, but I hope you wouldn't think I, or really anyone would really go throught the time just to import something b.s.? I had imported a few captive bred Salvadori directly from Duncan at Herpafauna Indonesia. It saved me a good deal over what they were going for after they had gotten to DnJ, and there were absolutely no external or internal parasites. The animals were flawless and deffinatly beautiful, and no worries about getting ripped off.

I would use ProExotics but they don't carry the dwarves (except for ackies) which is what I'm interested in. (kings,cauds,eremius,storri...)

Total fees and freight charges on my upcoming shipment from Indonesia is approximately $1650 hardly "doable" for somebody bringing in a few animals or even alot of animals for personal use.

$1600??????? I know it was a few years ago, like five, but it was no where near that much. I don't know who you were/are dealing with, but that's just ridiculous! A couple years before that it was only $350 for a shipment of two animals and CITES permits! I might have had to pay a $20 freight cargo hadling fee, but that's it.

I have to pay a $150 permit fee, $100 handling fee, $25 box fee per box and about $12.04 per kg for freight which equaled out in total to about $1300 for about 86 animals total I'm not necessarily dealing with small quantities here.

If you would have taken the time to actually read my first post that you responded to, you would see that I said I only imported a couple animals.

Not saying you were wrong just trying to point out the fees. Whether my order is 1 animal or 200 the permit fee and handling charge are the same not to mention the 25 dollar box and the freight. Plus there arent too many exporters that will deal with a 1-3 animal order.

That price of $1600 would have not even been brought up. The original thread starting post was for importing a monitor, meaning one. My follow up was a response for that poster, and that amount of animals, not 86 or whatever you said.
