TOWNSVILLE BULLETIN (Australia) 29 April 06 Stroppy croc snatches annoying chainsaw
A crocodile agitated by a chainsaw's noise has chased the man operating it and snatched the machinery from him.
Freddy Buckland was at a Northern Territory roadhouse yesterday cutting a dead tree that had fallen against a saltwater crocodile pen during Cyclone Monica when the 4.4m reptile struck.
"As he was trimming up the tree on the outside the croc jumped out of the water and sped along the tree about 18, 20 feet and actually grabbed the chainsaw out of his hands," Peter Shappert, the owner of the Corroboree Park Tavern, 80km east of Darwin, said.
"It must have been the noise ... I don't think he was actually trying to grab Freddy, but I'm not sure. He had a fair go at him ... I think he just grabbed the first thing he could and it happened to be the chainsaw."
Mr Buckland was not injured, nor was the crocodile, named Brutus.
"But he (the crocodile) is still a bit upset ... he's still a bit agitated, but he's all right," Mr Shappert said.
"He chewed on the chainsaw for about an hour-and-a-half, then we finally got it out.
"We got a bit of reinforcing rod, bent with a hook on the end, and at the same time we were draining the pen. It's still in one piece but, yeah, it's buggered."
Mr Shappert said he was thinking about changing the crocodile's name to 'two-stroke'.
As for the cleaning up effort, it's been postponed for a couple of days.
"We've just left the tree where it is. I think we'll reassess how we're going to do it," Mr Shappert said.

NORTHERN TERRITORY NEWS (Brisbane, Australia) 29 April 06 Sawtooth (Rebekah Cavanagh)
A large crocodile leapt out of a pond yesterday to rip a chainsaw from a man's hands as he trimmed a tree branch metres off the ground.
Fred Buckland got the fright off his life when he was cutting a tree, which had fallen in the 4.4m saltie's pen at Corroboree Park Tavern about 10am.
Tavern owner Peter Shappert said when Cyclone Monica swept through the tourist centre _ about 80km south-west of Darwin _ this week, a 10m high tree fell across the boundary fence of the saltie's pen.
He said they feared the fence could break and the croc could escape, so Mr Buckland was helping to fix it.
``He didn't want to go into Brutus' pen so he stood on a ladder and leaned over into it to cut the tree,'' he said.
``I think Brutus was a bit upset with all the noise and in two seconds he's leapt 20ft off the water and scrambled up the tree, snatching the chainsaw out of his hand.''
``Freddy got a bit of a scare and jumped straight off the ladder. He was certainly ready for his rum for the day and it was only 10am.''
Mr Shappert said it was either the chainsaw or Freddy.
``Freddy was very lucky. It could have been him dragged back into the pond and him eaten for breakfast,'' he said.
Mr Shappert said they were now thinking of giving Brutus the nickname ``two-stroke''.
It is not the first time Mr Shappert's reptile pets have taken a liking, or disliking, to machinery.
``Just over a year ago I had a freshie bite a lawn mower, while we were trying to mow inside the pen,'' he said. ``They must not like the noise.''
He has been at Corroboree Park Tavern for about five years.
