NY Press: 2 pythons found in Suffolk Co

Apr 29, 2006 02:33 PM

WABC (New York, New York) 28 April 06 Two pythons found in Suffolk County home
Animal protection officers got quite a surprise today when they raided a home in Suffolk County.
Inside the home on Granny Road in Medford, the agents seized two Burmese pythons.
One snake is about 11 feet long and weighs 100 pounds; the other is 7 feet and about 60 pounds.
It's a violation of state laws to keep the big reptiles as pets. Two children were also living in the house. The snakes will be given to expert reptile keepers.
The owner is now charged with endangering the welfare of children.

play hard ball to WIN.

To them it's a game and they always press the most severe
charges possible.

I'm amazed they didn't try and take his kids away.

As for the 100 lbs at 10 feet, seems a little exagerated to
me...

You're right about the D. A.: they always highball and and bargin later. If the pythons were caged, I can't see how the endangerment will stick if its based on that fact solely. Article does not state probable cause for the "raid" but I'd guess dope. Its an embarassing fact but after 21 years in law enforcement in So Cal, I can attest to the fact that dope and herps are often found in the same residence...

...ahem, my error. Article does say "by Animal Protection Officers". So much for my generalization. Makes it even sader for me. Animal Control has intel that some citizen is keeping large reptiles...busted! Shame on NY Law Enforcement. There has got to be more important targets in New York.

child endangerment...boy do they use that term loosely.i was raised around giant snakes all my life, now when i say giants i mean retics over 20' and burms over 17'and not once in my life was in "danger",i was always well supervised and was never allowed to get near the head of said snakes, which brings up the fact that most people dont have any problem letting their kids kiss and love on the family dog...the family dog that kills and mains and disfigures more children and even adults evry year than pythons do every decade. its an arguement that we as snake keepers will never win.i was attacked by the "family dog" and now have scars all over my head and face from said dog grabbing me by my head and dragging me under a tree then he pinned me down with his paws and started gnawing on my head.i was in the hospital for several days getting stiched up and being kept under supervision at only 4 years of age...i still have the scars both physically and mentally...and it happens to children all over the world, every day, probably an attack happening as you read this...but no dog bans hmmmm...as for the 7' 60 lber...no way...people exaggerate to make it sound as if the snake was huge...a 60 lb 7' burm would look like a sausage and be nearly unable to move let alone pose a danger to anyone...id keep typeing but im getting disgusted just thinking about this....im glad i live in houston were as for now (hopefully it dosent change)im allowed to keep any snake i want...and my kids will not have dogs.
