Upstate New York

This is the first time I've ever gotten out this early to look for timber rattlesnakes. I slipped on a loose rock and braced myself with one arm and kept my camera from slamming against the rocks with my other arm. Before I could stand up, I saw this snake about 2 feet to my right, wedged under a rock.

...about 5 minutes later, I was trying to descend the loose rocks and had to get down(heading to IL on business...if anyone in IL wants to go herping, email me!)..anyway, I hadn't walked 20 yards, and found these two fat snakes. They were noticeably chunkier than the first snake.

Nice shots, Matt, especially the closeup where you can see the second timber's head behind the first! Be careful, man!

Great finds and pictures. My only question is your general location. You say you are in Upstate NY, now is that like Kingston, or Albany NY, area or farther north. I am up in Watertown NY and that is the real upstate NY. Just wondering because I have never seen any of these recorded in this area.

Ulster County. But I know what you mean.....to me Upstate NY is REALLY the Adirondacks....but to most NYC-ites, Westchester County is upstate NY. To me, anything below the White Plains is essentially, NYC.

Well if you are ever up in the Watertown, Syracuse area then give me a shout, we could do a little herping up here.
