What are the smaller varieties?

zxcv1234 Apr 29, 2006 06:48 PM

I want to get a rainbow boa (self explanatory)!

What I would like to know is this:

What are the smaller varieties/subspecies of rainbow boas and what lengths do they generally attain?

I have read that some types stay around 4 feet....

Thanks in advance!

There are three subspecies that are sometimes available that stay small. Argentinian Rainbow Boas, Epicrates cenchria alvarezi are often less than 4.5 feet long. A few do get larger. The uncategorized subspecies that is commonly called the Guyanan Rainbow Boa usually stays less than 4 feet in length. Both subspecies are available both captive born and imported here in the US. The Campina Grande Rainbow Boa Epicrates cenchria assisi is a little smaller and thinner than both of these subspecies but is uncommon in US collections. The "problem" with all three of these subspecies is that they are not brightly colored like the commonly available nominant subspecies. If you get a male Brazilian Rainbow Boa, Epicrates cenchria cenchria and do not feed it too heavily while young it will often not get much larger than 5.5 feet long.
