Ornate Eggs 10!

pgross8245 Apr 30, 2006 09:31 AM

Well, I have my first uro eggs, 10 laid by my ornate pair Husani and Zari. All are fertile. Now we'll see if I can successfully hatch any of them, the hard part. Throughout the years I have had my uros I have yet to come across precise information as to incubation techniques such as the best medium, temps and humidity. I have decided to go with a 70/30 perlite, temps around 89 and humidity about 80-90%. I have them in a box with 4 tiny pinholes. I have hatched monitor eggs using a similar technique with less humidity and a 50/50 perlite mix. If anyone who has successfully hatched eggs has any comments, let me know. The things I have read are they need high humidity and temps ranging from 85-94 depending on whose info you read. The pic shows 9 eggs, I found the last one after I took it. I have had these uros for 3 years since they were little, so I am quite excited. Hope it lasts.

Pam

I know I've asked this before, but 30/70 ratio of Perlite and ???

Are you using an incubator or something you made yourself?

Thanks.
Jim

Oh, congrats!

Hi Jim,

70% water (85-89 degrees) mixed with 30% perlite by weight. I use a hovabator 6202N I believe. I put water in the bottom two channels, put the perlite, water and eggs in a rubbermaid container with 4 pin holes. I use a humidity guage inside the box and have an external humidity guage as well as a probe type for temps. I want to get a probe type for humidity as well. I have used this method for monitor eggs which take longer, so we'll see. I messed up some monitor eggs with too low of humidity. I understand uro eggs dry out quickly, so humidity is imperative. I don't like to get too excited at this early stage. I am excited to get viable eggs though. The best is to only look at them about once a week, I would take the box out of the incubator, refill the channels with water and take the cover off the rubbermaid to look at the eggs and let fresh air in. I made notes if any were dented badly. The rule of thumb is to never be to quick to dump any eggs, sometimes even the lousy looking ones can end up hatching. It was nice with the uro eggs to immediately see they were fertile. I didn't have that with my monitors, I had to wait a while and then carefully candled them to see the blood spot. Good luck with yours, hopefully we'll both have something to celebrate in a few months.

Eeeck! Sounds so complicated. I'm going to print out your post and see if that helps when it comes time to acquire all the needed ingredients. However, the hovabator may prove a problem in my time frame.

Hi,

I ordered mine from LLL and got it in about 4 days. If you ordered it today, you would have it by Friday. The best is to get it set up ahead of time to make sure your temps and humidity are good, then all you have to do is set your eggs in when they arrive. Good luck!!

How much was it shipped, if you don't mind me asking (tight budget)?

Hi,

It was $48.90 shipped. It is the Thermal Hovabator. Don't use the little deli cups with vermiculite, whether you choose vermiculite or perlite, use a large container, it is easier to maintain the temps and humidity in one large box than a whole bunch of small ones. Good luck!

I ordered one yesterday. There is a hatchery somewhere close by, but I can't imagine them selling anything in small scale. This works perfectly into my non-existant budget. I'm very excited about the possibility of hatchlings. I haven't ventured into breeding yet, and though it's not the best time, I'm very much looking forward to it.

Did you follow the included directions when it came to figuring out the amount of water? Did you use a commonly found container for the inside?

70% water - 30% perlite???????
shouldn't this mix be opposite.....30% water and 70% perlite?
Too much water in the medium and the eggs will mold....

Typing over ran my brain, you are absolutely correct 70% perlite to 30% water. Talk about DUH...sorry about that.
