Praying mantis eggs

schwartzenstobe Apr 30, 2006 10:20 AM

Hello everyone Happy spring! I got 3 mantis eggs in the mail the other day I hung one in my garden gave the other to a friend and wanted to hatch the other inside. I have a huge tank and was wondering what everyone does to hatch them.I was thinking of hanging it in the tank and putting a 60 or a 75 watt bulb on the screen top. Any suggestions would be appreciated Thanks Matt

Hey Matt,

I just hatched one out by placing it in a rearing cage (with some phoenix worm pupae) and had a 60w bulb on it (about 10" away). Once they began to emerge I moved it directly into my blotchies tank and they continues to come out and be eaten. So that's if you want to feed them right off to some herps. If not, put them in a tank/cage with very fine screen (they are small!) and make pinheads and/or fruit flies available to grow them on. Some will pribably eat each other.

good luck!

Lele when you say rearing cage what do you mean? is a tank good enough? I have a 20 or 30 tall

sorry. ;-/ I use actual "rearing cages" for my wild silks which are screen, metal and have a "sleeve" so you can reach in and nothing gets out.

But a small tank or most anything that will retain the heat but not "fry" them. Even room temp at about 75 will do.
