fire-scarred or VERY old???

piglet Jul 30, 2003 02:02 PM

This guy was in a pineforest that has occasional brush burns.I was wondering if he survived a fire or is just very old. Most of his annuli were not even visible and his skin was very black.

Extreme heat could take the annuli to smooth easily.

yep, this is true. This guy at least survived a fire (could be a gal, I don't know), and MAY also be old. I haven't seen a turtle with fire damage that was not smooth, so I would suspect that the intense heat (enough to permanently damage the shell) could easily melt and smooth the outer keratin layer (hold a sliver of fingernail in a candle flame)
