Do corns have the same nervousness around people that kings have? do corns spend their entire lives hidden like kings? i've heard some good things about corns but don't personally know anyone who has one.
thanks, tom

I'm not an expert, but have had Kings and corns for the same amount of time, and adore both species. Nervousness can be a characterisitc of a species, but also it depends on the individual. Many kingsnake owners will tell you how their snakes secrete themselves in a hiding spot, but my cal king is more active and visible than my corns. However, I'd have to say that a corn snake is typically the better beginner snake. Hope this helps a bit.

Answer come down to each snake and the odds of "nervousness"
I've seen kings calmer than any corn, but that is not the rule.
If you had 100 of each.
More corns would be calmer and "nicer temperment"
and less kings would be calmer and "nicer temperment"
If the king is at least a year old I think you can get a pretty good idea on how it will be later in life. If someone take him out of a cage, and he musks and is all over, he may improve but usually only so much. But that applies to corn too.
Bottom line be picky in what you want. Handle the snake, in a natural warm room lol. If the snake is calm, good chases are he will stay that way.
I had a nasty ball python, you could not get near him. So this rule applies to most things.
Corns generally more calm
then kings
then pine/gophers
then african rocks

In my experience, how much and how often you handle a snake will make a big difference. In general, some species are just hyper, such as cave dwelling rats. Beautiful but they were always hyper and defensive when I worked with them. I had 1 cal king that was more of a pet. She always acknowledged your presence when you approached her cage. Always followed your movements and did not bite. She was handled often and calmed down but when she was young, she was a typical cal king. Same of my corns. The ones that are handled more often are calmer. If you want to be able to handle a corn or king, not get musked, not get bit, not end up with feces on your hand or shirt, then work with it and handle it often. As a hatching, they are going to make a mess but they will calm down.
Here my experience with both. I have two Cali kings and two corns.
Female Cali-king very gentle has never musk always out laying on his log. Will not
Eat pre-killed mice. I guess she likes the hunt.
Male cali-king – very aggressive and musk every time you pick her up. Lives in his
Cave or under large grapevine log. Will eat anything put near him. I can usually throw a pre-killed in the cage and before It even hits the ground he has it in her mouth and wrap around it.
Male corn – very gentle and always curled up on his stump. Will come right up
And take the pre-kill out of my hand with out striking.
Female corn – gentle but very secretive. Eats pre-killed and strikes like crazy.
50/50 split I guess.
should be - Female Cali-king very gentle has never musk always out laying on "her" log.
to bad you cannot edit on this forum.

LOL. I am sorry, I have to laugh. You tried three times to post that with out errors and it still goes back and forth from he or she, her and his.
Don't worry about it, we get the point! I usually don't worry about it or try to correct errors unless they are about the key info. Most prople understand there is no editor and get the point

My butter corn stays hidden all the time but my cali king is very active and comes towards you when you pull his bin out of the rack...just depends on the individual snake I guess.
