Slow Growth Rate?

AFTfanatic Apr 30, 2006 08:48 PM

Hi, I'm worried that my two cresties aren't growing properly. My male has a length of 6.5 inches and weighs 25 grams. My female is tailless, has a SNV of 4 inches and has a weight of 21 grams. I got my male in October and he weighed 15 grams. My female was about the same when I got her in December. I ask if they're slow growers because I've been to several shows and specialty stores where their cresties are absolute tanks, and are often only a year to 18 months old. I was told when I bought each of my geckos that they were roughly 6 months old. Every other day they alternate between pureed mango baby food with a touch of calcium and vitamin dusted crickets. If they aren't at a healthy weight, how can I bulk them up? Sorry for all the questions, but I want to raise the geckos right. Thanks for any help!

Growth rates depend on a lot of things,
Stress, food intake, food being offered, temp., humidity, parasites, etc.
I feed mine almost exclusively t-rex CGD and would say mine grow fairly slow. I also keep them around 72 degrees during the winter, and about 80-85 in the summer. My juveniles that hatched in october of last year only weigh about 10 grams. After they get to 10-15 grams they usually start growing very quickly, and will be at 30-35 grams in another few months.
Just remember all animals are different just like humans are. If you're doing everything right for them then there's nothing you can really do but wait for them to get to the appropriate size on their own.
The only real suggestions I would have to increase growth rate would be to possibly keep the temperature around 80 degrees, and offer the t-rex crested gecko diet or gargoyle gecko diet. Many people feed the Gargoyle gecko diet because it is higher in protein, and will usually make them grow faster.
