Kingsnake retaining eggs

awesomo6000 Apr 30, 2006 10:22 PM

I've got a female desert king who's just under 4 feet long. She's never been with a male, but she produced 3 infertile eggs. I've heard of that happening before, so I wasn't too concerned about it until she kept one inside about 1-1.5" from her cloaca. I'm not sure what to do about this. I know the ultimate solution to these sorts of problems is to take her to the vet, but I was wondering if there was anything I could try myself before shelling out the money for vet bills.

Thanks for any help you can give

If the eggs are infertile, nothing to lose but the snake so you have a couple of options. Do not wait too long from the time she dropped the first eggs. I would try a warm water bath as a first option. Fill a sterilite/rubbermaid tub about 3 inches deep with warm water. Up to about 88-90 degrees, it cools off quick. Soak her for about 10-15 minutes. Then remove her and try to massage the egg down. You may be able to get it out. If not, get it as close to her vent as you can. Then you aspirate(sp) the egg. Fancy way of saying, puncture it with a syringe and draw out the fluid. Then she'll pass the shell. The longer you wait, the more difficult it is to massage the egg out.

Good luck and please let us know how it goes.
