Retail Digging

vweater2001 May 01, 2006 11:07 AM

My redtail is starting to hide under her substrate. It's that wood shavings that they sell at the peststore that everyone uses for their cages, etc... Is that normal? I also started to notice that she loves to stay on the cooler side of the cage more than the warm side is that normal too? I only keep the cage to 90 degrees and that is that highest I like to keep it at. At night I keep it from 75-80 degrees, Is that o.k. let me know I just want to know she will be o.k. Thanks for your help.

Make sure you know what kind of wood shavings you are using... some are bad for your boas.

Also, the whole cage being 90 degrees is way too hot.

The cage being 75-80 throughout is just about good.... I presume you also have a hot spot besides the ambient temps..

Thanks, Joe

Oh yeah, if you give them something to dig or hide under, they will use it.

I know for a fact that I am using that correct wood shavings. It's the one that every shop uses on their snakes and most of the breeders here use. Thanks for letting me know about the temperature being too hot. Yes I have a hot spot besides the ambient temperature. I'll modify my heat-rehostate to comply with what you've said. So should the temp be 75-85 day and night? Let me know.

I've always thought most have supplied their boas with way too much heat.
My cages are probably low 70's on the cool end and mid 80's on the high end and the boas are always on the cool side.

I would say 85 as the highest daytime ambient temp, maybe 5 degrees or so cooler at night.
