how do you tell the males from the females?

Males are typically smaller. They have longer front claws with which they'll "tickle" the female's face (it's pretty entertaining). Also, the tail of the male is much longer than the female. The vent of the tail will extend much further beyond the edge of the shell than in the female. Also, female turtles complain more...kidding.
