what do ya'll keep your mice in??

evercraig190 May 01, 2006 01:44 PM

I have what I think is a small collection of snakes. 10-15 snakes, mainly yearlings and a couple of adults...I am tired of driving to the pet store every week and i would like to keep mice at my house and possibly breed them. Usually i buy extra mice and the few that i have left after feeding go into a 10gal tank for a couple of days. Could someone please post some pictures of some "homemade" mice enclosures. I have an idea to make my own out of a wooden frame with chicken wire as the bottom and sides and keep it outside...any suggestions would be great....

There is some good information in the Feeder rodent forum here at KS, you just have to look for it. I've seem plans posted from time to time there. I'll include a link. Personally I use plastic cat litter pans for the tubs of my mouse colony.

Here is a great mouse rack set up. You wont need one quite so big mayb just one level but it will give you an idea of what would be a good rack to build - I have a small one that is similar three rows on the top three on the bottom. It works great - it will probably take you several months to establish a mouse colony so be sure that you buy lots of mice to get started - you'll be feeding them off frequently. Also use 1/4 inch wire for mice anything bigger and the hoppers will get out on you.

Hope this helps...

except mine uses rubbermaid dishpans for the tubs and is 2 wide x 6 high with a colony of 1 male to 3 or 4 females. Instead of the auto drip watering system I used those small animal water bottles you can get at Walmart for under $2 each and just enlarged one of the holes in the mesh for the tubes to go thru. The bottles lean at an angle on the wood supports and yeah, they need to be filled daily but for a small setup it's not too bad.

If you build something like this, get twice as many tubs as you'll need so you can just set up the fresh ones and move the mice over.

I've never had much luck with those white lab mice that you usually find as feeder mice. Too picky about temps and such things. My colonies are multi colored mutts and they're hardy and breed all year round for me no matter what the temps are.

WOW, thats really a nice looking rack. That water system looks like a lot of work though, Tosha, do you have any problems with leaks? Could I modify that for Rats? Do you have any plans for a rat rack?
