eggs stuck in Ghost Cali... please HELP!

ZFelicien May 01, 2006 06:48 PM

Ok my buddy has a female Ghost Cali King with 3 eggs stuck in her she said he tried to push them out without luck... he also said he drained some of the fluid from the egg closest to the vent... any other things he can do?

He's talk'n a lil crazy about killing the female cutting her head off and getting the two good eggs (and yes he's very serious) so i'd like to know what else he can do.

Thanx

How long have they been in her (since the others were laid)?
Dip snake in some luke warm water and try to massage them out by applying pressure in front of the "lumps" then sliding your fingers down and try to force the eggs out (don't be too rough, but DO use some pressure) . . .

Z~

You need to tell your buddy to relax. Snakes do this all the time. I have a large female who retained eggs last year and still has them in her. She is gravid again and probably has over 25 eggs in total. She will probably pass them all in a couple months. Otherwiase she is huge and always looks for a meal when I open the drawer.

Other snakes I have had that retained eggs it was always worse (for the snake) to try and remove them in amy way. I have manipultaed eggs out of many colubrids and it is very stressful on the animal (and the keeper). I have also payed twice for a vet to do it and the snakes died afterwards.

They usaully expell them on their own. As long as the snake is happy and eats, all is good.

if he kills the female the eggs wont be good anyway.

Hi Zenny,

The retained eggs are no good. I'd return the snake to it's cage and attempt to feed it after it settles in. This has worked on a number of occasions for me. I'm not sure if the snake needs a rest or a boost of energy, but after a few days they usually manage to get the eggs out on their own.

Literally...throw her in the pool. Make her swim and thrash about like crazy and get some exercise. I think a lot of the problems are from sitting in a sweaterbox for years without ever having to haul a$$ from a fox or predator, dive into a crack in a rock, chase down a rat, etc. Lazy fat no-muscle tone domesticated laying hen. Throw her in a swimming pool, and fish her out after a few minutes. Keep an eye out, or heck jump in there and get some exercise yourself. (Post that shot!) Read any FR post you can and start to treat your hen like a snake. Oh yea, and use pro biotics to make up for the steady diet of pre-killed frozen thawed grain raised mice you feed them with too. Really, just chill and remember it’s a snake

Is this snake in a sweaterbox? If so, get her in a larger cage with a nice warm damp area and a cool area (you can use Eco-Earth or similar coconut husk product.) IMO, sweaterboxes and lack of choices of where to lay eggs may be a major contributor as to why this happens. And let her be.

Tell your friend that killing the female is absolutely rediculous. Heck, I'd pay shipping and a small amount for the snake as is.
