Burm hurting herself?

notlost May 01, 2006 07:36 PM

I have a 7.5' burm who seems intent on finding ways to hurt herself.

She's about two years old and we have tried four different enclosures in that time because every time we try a new enclosure she will be content for a little while and then find a way to hurt herself trying to escape it. Our focus is progrssively becoming a game of trying to figure out how she might hurt herself and stay ahead of her.

95% of the time she is fine, very content to be anywhere, but she will get these moods a couple times a month and during that time will do ANYTHING to get out. It's gotten to the point where we made a simple acrylic cage with all rounded edges (because if she finds a corner anywhere she will push until she cuts herself open on it). During those phases we can't even keep a water bowl in with her without supervision. Still, we keep seeing marks on her. My husband used to let her roam the house when she was smaller and I keep wondering if she ... feels she deserves to be out. I can't think of another way to put it.

Is there anything I can do short of building her a padded room?

Don't take this the wrong way, and keep in mind I have no idea of your temps in the cage, but it sounds like it might be too hot for her. Snakes will be nice and calm and content unless something is wrong in their environment. Please list all three temps and the humidity so we can help you more.

And if you are using a hot rock (again, I don't know if you are), do the snake a favor, box it up, and mail it back to h3ll where it came from.

Every time she gets restless feed her a large meal. This will cause her to go pile up again to digest. For a 7 foot female I would suggest a 3 pound rabbit.
