Where are they all coming from aren't they illegal to import under 6''? From last I've heard they have yet to be bred in US have they all been fron imported gravid females?

Matas have been bred many times in the U.S. Many of these have been at zoos and aquaria. They are easy to breed you just need lots of room.
Also, it is not illegal to import turtles under 6". Fish & wildlife limits 6 turtles or less under 4" imported in a single box. So, you could easily import 200 hatchling turtles they would just need to be in 34 separate boxes.
The large numbers coming in now are probably "farm" bred in Venezuela or Guyana and/or wild collected. This is speculation, I don't know for sure.
