Blue belly, plz help!

kindergecko May 01, 2006 11:11 PM

I have a baby (5wk maybe) albino lepord gecko. He's cute as a button but I noticed today after 8 hrs, his belly is turning a bluish color. He couldn't have injested anything bad because there's nothing in his cage that would cause a problem. He ate his cricket bits (gut loaded crickets cut in half) last night from tweezers and drank plenty of water and has been walking around and lets me pick him up and jumps around. I'm just worried about the blue color. Any adivse out there?

I've never seen this in a gecko, but it happened to the very first snake i owned, and he died of impactation. i would definately say get the little guy to the vet and i'm pretty sure everyone here will agree with me on that one.

Baby albinos tend to be a little more transparent. What you are seeing is likly just organs or poop.
I wouldn't worry as long as it is acting normal.

i would say impactation is a possibility if the gecko has lived on sand during any part of its life. if it has i would definatly take it to the vet just incase. however if it has not lived on sand it just might be full of the crickets being digested. my question is though, why do you hand feed it cut in half crickets? you should let it eat them on its own. as long as the crickets are baby crickets it shouldnt have a problem eating or catching them unless there is something wrong with it. hand feeding is a bad idea becuase the gecko becomes acustom to it and eventually wont eat unless something is dangling in front of its face. i have a aquired a leopard gecko and a fat tail that will not eat by themselves becuase the stupid person who had them prior hand fed them their entire lives. i have waited months for them to eat on their on and finally i get to scared and give in because they start to get skinny. anyhow it is not a good idea unless the gecko has a handy-cap and needs to be helped or something like that. let the little fella eat on its own and as mutch as it wants untill it stops growing or getting overweight.

I cut them in half because they are bigger than he is. I got him pinhead crickets and they bit him too much and had to be taken out. The cricket bites on his legs finally went away the other day. He's now shedding. I also found out through a herp vet that he's only about 2 - 3 weeks old bought from a petstore. But he seems to be doing just fine now. The blueness went away on it's own after passing a rather large stool. He laps his calcium and eats his crickets from their dish now so he's not dependant on me to hand feed him. Thanks everyone for your help and information! = ) I'll post pics of him in a bit.

Yes I posted above to another dark spot on the belly about snakes and a dark spot that sometimes indicates liver failure. I know that gecks are more transparent so the organs do show and also food and poop shows too. So not trying to scare you but I am just learning so I wanted to post it for info about liver failure in geckos. Thanks Deb
