Hatchling Questions

PattiGecko May 01, 2006 11:58 PM

Hi Everyone,

This is my first experience with hatchlings and two more babies just hatched for me today and now I am wondering about a few things. First of all I have an existing 2 week old and my first instinct was to put them all together as you will find in the picture (the older one is in the middle). It's hard to tell a big size difference but I took the older one out when it (kinda) snapped at one of the new ones. Is that normal behavior and are my new babies safe or should I keep them separated? Which leads me to my next question about the future clutches in the incubator. Do I need to separate each new clutch or is a few weeks age difference okay? If they snap at each other are they just getting acquainted? I see pictures all the time of all the hatchlings together but I don't want any of them to get hurt. Also I'm finding that one of my new babies is quite friendly. If I put my hand out it will climb on it and lay there, is he cold???

Oh and speaking of clutches, my female laid her 5th clutch last week and I've been wondering how many more I can expect.

And I was wondering what anyone can tell me about the difference in coloring. The older one has brighter yellow....

Have I asked enought questions? Thank you for any advice you can give me.

P.S. Yes, that's right, I put them on Christmas napkins. Then I remembered the cage carpet just a bit too late (oh well, next cleaning...)

I just noticed that one of my new hatchlings has like a black dot on its belly-looks like there's something inside. It happened to be the friendly one who's now mad at me for trying to take a picture of its belly. Should I worry about that spot???

And while I'm at it I need to add another question about ears. The other new hatchling looks as if it has something black in its ear..like a tiny piece of fuzz...can't seem to get a picture of that, either. But I've never seen anything in any of my geckos ears. Any idea what it might be?

I wanted to mention that in snakes a dark spot is the liver in failure. Of course in geckos being see thru to a certain extent I am sure the organs show thru and some are dark, also food they eat like crickets can be seen sometimes after they are eaten. So since I am new to gecks I just wanted to mention this so I can understand if this can be true with geckos as well. I didn't post this to scare you. Thanks, Deb

Deb,
Does this look at all like it could be a problem? This is a very translucent belly of a tiny underweight gecko

I just found this info on the net...
"He (the vet) told us that her liver is supposed to be a dark color when seen through her skin. He said that hers is a light tan color and that she has a liver disease that she may or may not outgrow in time."

I don't know if it's a fact or not... but it made me feel a little better!

Hi Again, Yes a fatty liver is yellowish tan in color but liver failure tends to be dark usually black in snakes(not sure in geckos) I wouldn't worry too much on this right now anyway. The main problem is getting it to gain weight and doing a fecal test. Thats what I would focus on for now. My geckos I told you about have dark areas there too(only the albino, patternless and blizzards though) So don't worry. I just know I have seen liver failure in snakes and it is always black, greenish or a black blue coloration. But keep in mind most snakes do not have transparent bellies either. Deb

Hi Gecko Happy, That is the organ, It looks like it may be enlarged for its size because my albinos, blizzards and patternless have a black area like that and the albino and patternless are adults. That is the liver or gallbladder area. My blizzard babies( which are very young(under 1 month) do not show up like that. Is it liver failure, I do not know, as I am not a Vet but I guess I would just watch how he is eating and drinking and if he is gaining weight. One thing I would do though is check for coccidia as there is a disease called Pencil tail, Skinny tail caused by coccidia that can kill geckos if not treated in time. A fecal test isn't expensive. And if he has it or any Parasite, I'd treat that. But as long he is gaining weight, stays active and having bowel movements then I wouldn't worry about the black spot just yet. Its a great thing you are doing for this little one. Good Luck with him. This is what I do for a living. Emergency Pet Care so I rescue and deal with all types of animals and reptiles everyday But I am always learning too. Deb

Here is a good picture of the gall bladder in an ovulating female. It's the small black/drk blue dot near my thumb, in her mid-section.

Seperate them, they will be bullied by the larger one.

I keep each clutch together, untill they are a few weeks old then each gets their own home by themselves. They may be seperated earlier if I notice ay signs of bullying between clutchmates.

The female maybe done, and she may not. Never know what they will produce for you. If she's a first year breeder, she's on a good start already! Congratulations.

Thanks, balloonz, yes she is a first time breeder. I just hope the poor girl gets done soon. This last clutch was HUGE and she always looks so skinny afterwards. And now I'm afraid she's got more coming. I better run out and get more tanks! lol
