Ackie info

KevColubrid May 02, 2006 12:24 AM

Hey all,
Just made the decision, after much thought, to get into ackies. Several quick questions.

1. Is an 80 gallon tank big enough for one male? Eventually, I'd like to get a pair, but right now, I'll stick with one. I'm planning on getting a baby, so he'll go in a 20 gallon until he's bigger.

2. For substrate, what do you guys recommend?

3. Feeding, how often?

4. What kind of a heating source do you guys use?

5. Red or yellow? I'd just like to get some opinions from people who keep either or both.

Thanks, I really appreciate it

Kevin

kevin, keep in mind the red ackies get a little larger, than the yellows.the yellows are much calmer then the reds.the reds got the looks.either choice is a good one for a small monitor.good luck ED CLARK

It's ultimately up to you how you decide to care for your ackies. As for me, I'd go with ProExotic's care guide. As for wattages, 150 watt bulbs are a real fire hazard. You don't have to cook the whole cage, just offer temperature choices (high temps to cool temps). My 45 watt bulb(outdoor halogen flood), about ten inches above the substrate creates 90-100 degrees directly underneath it, and you can raise this temp by simply allowing the monitors to get closer to the light(retes stack). That is plenty hot.

Again, I suggest you research ProExotic's caresheet or any other reputable breeder.
