Mixed Tank Help

Jerbob May 02, 2006 10:03 AM

I have a question. I am a new dart frog owner. I purchased some D. azureus and D. auratus from the same breeder that were raised together and they are all doing well. Now I recently bought some D. tinctorius from another breeder. They are eating and defecating well, are the same size as the rest of the frogs, and appear very healhty. I have 5 frogs in a 20 gallon long tank, and two new tincs. Would it be a good idea to incorporate them into my the mix with my auratus and azureus and what is the best way and time to do so? Any help for a dart frog newbie would be appreciated. Thanks.

Ok, from what I remember reading, there is a real danger with the frogs you have mentioned breeding with the tincs. Breeders will frown on mixes, as they try to keep the genus pure. Now, secondly, you really should stick to the one frog per five gallon rule. Just a suggestion really, but if you want your frogs to be comfortable, they should be in smaller groups. I know they were raised together, but they should probably be seperated.

So no, I would not add the tincs to the tank, rather give them their own space. There is already too many frogs for the tank size and you don't want to risk them breeding.

I agree, beside what was already stated. If you end up with female Tincs and female Azureus the chances of them fighting is GREATLY increased. Also I think the auratus would eventually be out competed for food. Anyways if thats 5 adults in a 20 gallon thats a little cramped IMO already.

Thanks for the help for a newbie. Just so you know, the greens and blues I had together were young juveniles not adults. I never intended to house them together as adults. The 20gal setup was a summer temporary till I get back to my college and have their facilites to my advantage. That is why I had 5 in it in the first place.
